AVS Updates and Events
End-of-The-Year Party!
On Tuesday of tenth week, AVS will have its annual end-of-the-year party at Matt's house! There are rumors of sloppy joes, pineapple teriyaki dip and bananas foster! Do we ever try new recipes??? Yes, but not this time! Meet in Java at 7 pm, and we will walk to Matt's house.
2006-2007 Elections!
Next year's AVS Executive Board will be as follows:
President: Sarah Konfirst
Vice-President: Danielle Duchene
Secretary: Melissa Johansen
Treasurer: Kristen Maki
Parliamentarian: Kristen Kaseeska
Webmaster: Matt Moore
Congratulations to everyone!!! Formal officer changeover rituals will be performed at our end-of-the-year party.
The Great American Meatout 2006
March 20, 2006
AVS received 50 pledges for the Great American Meatout on the first day of spring, March 20! Thanks to everyone who pledged and help get pledges.
AVS Vegetarian Feast
Late Spring
Dr. Vivian, a long-time vegetarian and gourmet cook, has graciously invited AVS to a vegetarian dinner sometime in the spring! We will discuss this more after the Meatout campaign is over.
The Fourth Annual Vegetarian Pre-Finals Dinner
Our fourth Pre-Finals Dinner was a huge success as always! Thanks to everyone who came, donated dishes and helped prepare and clean up after the event. Please visit our photo gallery to see pictures!
T-shirt Orders!
We decided to make t-shirts that say "Kiss Me I'm Vegetarian" with a vegetables icon, copying the popular "Kiss Me I'm Irish" t-shirt that usually features a four-leaf clover. The t-shirts will be kelly green with white writing, and we'll have the same tiny AVS crest on the back as the "Eating Vegetables is Sexy" t-shirts. The approximate design is this. We will also sell last year's "Eating Vegetables is Sexy" t-shirt in a different color combination: grey t-shirt with forest green writing. Both are short-sleeved t-shirts with a small AVS crest on the top back. We will take orders for them during tenth week in the College Center from 11-1, along with Pre-Finals Dinner tickets. They will sell for $10 each, with a possible discount for buying both.
AVS Donates to The Humane Society of the USA
Because of the devastation caused by Hurricaine Katrina, AVS has donated $100 to The Humane Society of the United States, in the hopes that all the wildlife displaced by the disaster will not be overlooked.
AVS Adopts an Animal
AVS has adopted a dromedary camel from Niabi Zoo! Niabi Zoo offers many different animals to support monetarily, and we chose one that is a vegetarian! We will receive a certificate of adoption, a fact sheet about our camel, a color picture of him/her, and Augustana Vegetarian Society will be on the Parent's Board at Niabi for one year!
AVS T-shirts
We are officially sold out! View the design (a .pdf file) here.
Day in Chicago
We are hoping to plan a day in Chicago (probably a Saturday) sometime this year when we can go to the Chicago Diner, a completely vegetarian (and vegan) diner in Chicago that is Esther's most favorite restaurant in the entire WORLD, and then perhaps the Lincoln Park Zoo (free admission!) to admire all the animals we aren't eating. The cost to each member will be his or her food selections, and depending on how much money is in the AVS budget at the time, we may split the cost of gas money and parking. Hopefully AVS will be able to subsidize some of these costs.

The Fourth Annual Vegetarian Pre-Finals Dinner
As always, AVS will hold its famous "Vegetarian Pre-Finals Dinner" on the Sunday before finals week, November 13th, from 5-6 pm in the Andreen basement. Tickets will be sold during tenth week in the College Center from 11-1, for $3 pre-paid and $4 at the door. We hope to have our biggest crowd yet! Publicity will appear soon. Possibilities from last year include option 1, option 2, and option 3. A few new options using pictures from last year's dinner are option 4, option 5 and option 6. Other ideas are welcome, of course! We will also print campus mailbox stuffers.
The Third Annual Pre-Finals Dinner
This was a HUGE success!! Thank you to everyone who made dishes for us, and thank you to everyone who came! Pictures have been posted, so please visit our photo gallery to see them!
World Farm Animals Day
Have you hugged a goat lately? World Farm Animals Day is on October 2nd, which is also Gandhi's birthday. AVS had information about farm animals available in the College Center on Thursday, September 30th and Friday, October 1st, during the lunch hours of 11 am - 1 pm. We had a relatively good response and people loved the stickers!
Newspapers Contact AVS!
Both the Augustana Observer (Augustana's campus newspaper) and The Rock Island Argus have contacted AVS for input on articles they are writing about meatless lifestyles. The Argus published its article on Wednesday, April 28th, and if it is possible to find the text of the article, we will post that here as well. Congratulations to Linnea and Esther who are quoted in the article! Way to represent AVS! Visit our photo gallery to see pictures!
Easter Fundraiser
Just like last year, we sold plastic easter eggs filled with candy to the campus, that were placed in people's mailboxes on the Wednesday before Easter break. This fundraiser raised enough money to cover costs of the Meatout, which was a free event for all its participants. Thanks for everyone's support! Visit our photo gallery to see pictures!
The Great American Meatout 2004
March 20, 2004
This event received a lot of support on campus and in the media! AVS got 61 pledges, and gave out a lot of material on the benefits of a vegetarian lifestyle. Thanks to everyone who helped with this event! Pictures will be up in a few weeks. Visit meatout.org for more information and recaps of nation-wide events. The Second Annual Pre-Finals Vegetarian Dinner
Sunday, November 9, 2003 in the Andreen Basement, 5-6 pm
This was a huge success! Thank you to everyone who helped plan, set up, and clean, as well as to those who contributed to our huge range of dishes! We had a great turnout and we made a fair amount of money, given the minimal fee we charged. Visit our photo gallery to see pictures!
