AVS Minutes

4/11/06

Some dates to remember: Tuesday, April 18 (Monday class schedule but Tuesday evening activities): 06-07 officer nominations Tuesday, April 25: 06-07 officer elections Tuesday, May 9 (may possibly be moved to Wednesday): End-of-the-Year Party!!!!! Location will probably be Matt's house; if not, it will be at Esther's house. It will be in place of the meeting but will probably start a little earlier to facilitate the eating of extremely delicious food, followed by extremely delicious bananas foster. Other notes: --Our adoption of the dromedary camel expired, so Matt is going to check out some other herbivores up for adoption at Niabi. After we pick one, we can go visit it! --A few members have expressed interest in going out for Indian food. There's a pretty good place on Avenue of the Cities that has great deals on Monday nights and buffets on the weekends. We could do Monday of finals week or any Mondays left in the term around 5 or 5:30 pm. Once we get an animal, we can plan to go to the buffet on the weekend and go to the zoo afterword (though Matt will definitely have indigestion, so plan for that). --THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO PARTICIPATED IN SHANTYTOWN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3/28/06

Hello All! At this week's meeting we discussed possible participation in Shantytown, a Habitat for Humanity event that raises awareness about homelessness and/or poor housing. There is a possibility that we may join up with Global affect to help make this participation work. There are also other possible events coming up, like another visit to the zoo perhaps! The meatout was a success, thanks to everyone who helped make it possible!!! Well, that's about it. Have a good week everyone!!!

3/7/06

First of all, the Meatout is in just a few weeks: March 20, a Monday. Therefore, we are tabling in the college center to get signatures from Wednesday to Friday of next week and the following Monday, which is the actual Meatout day. A separate sign-up sheet will be sent soon (who likes that alliteration??? eh???). The pins we ordered have arrived and so have the actual Meatout materials, so we should be all set! Secondly, keep in mind a few events we want to have this term: trip to Niabi Zoo, Essen chez Dr. Vivian, salad with walnuts and sloppy joes on tater tots at Matt's house and at least one trip to Greatest Grains. We'll start planning dates a little later in the term. Thirdly, due to a class Danielle has the first 2/3 of this term, are people willing to reschedule our meeting time to 9 pm on Tuesday? Please let me know if that will conflict with your schedule. Fourthly, start thinking about what office you would like to hold next year. We currently have four choices: president, vice-president, secretary and parliamentarian. Treasurer has always been Matt, but if anyone would like to fight him for it, I'll provide the agar-agar! Man, I'm hilarious. Lastly, I will not be at the meeting next week due to a graduate school visit. Sarah will be in charge of the meeting.

2/14/06

Greetings! At this past week's meeting, Esther surprised us with a vocal valentine! Thank you Esther! We are still planning our meat-out tabling and signup on Wed. March 15th through Friday the 17th, as well as the actual Meat-out day, Monday the 20th. We will have information, stickers, and possibly buttons, as well as a sheet to have people sign-up to give up meat for the day! On Wednesday, March 8th, we will be having a dinner at Esther's house and possible a showing of "Babe: pig in the city". We will meet in Java at 5pm and walk to her house together. That's all for now--best of luck on finals everyone, and see you all next term!!!

2/7/06

The Meat out is coming up on March 20th!!! We will tabling the Wed, Thur, and Friday before as well as Monday the 20th as well! Let us know if you are interested in tabling! We are looking into investing in some buttons for the event, as well as giving a donation to FARM, the group that plans out the Meat out. Keep your eyes out for publicity in the next few weeks! On Tuesday, March 7th, we will be going to Esther's house to watch "Babe: Pig in the City". It should be a good time. I believe there may be food involved. Speaking of food, on April 10th (mark your calendars), we will be going out to a restaurant to get some yummy India food. Apparently they have $5 specials on Mondays, so it should be good food for a fair price. Also, by order of the President, please make sure you are on time for next weeks meeting (Who knows what Esther is planning?), but be there next week promptly at 8:30pm!!!!!! Have a great week everyone!!!!

1/31/06

We discussed the Meat-out (March 20th) events and possible fact sheets publicity during the week of the event. We also will be tabling for the event as usual, encouraging people to sign up and give up meat for one day, along with having information and stickers at hand. We are contemplating going out for Indian food at the beginning of next term also, along with a possible second movie night--to take place at the president's house (no, not THAT president). Anyways, Esther would be delighted to host another movie event, we are thinking the sequel to Babe (pig in the city?) This may theoretically happen on the Tuesday of 1st week next term.

1/17/06

This Thursday at 11:30 in Olin 205 we will have some food (sandwiches, dip, drinks) and hear Dr. Vivian talk about his experiences as a vegetarian. NEXT TUESDAY we will be viewing "Babe" in Olin 302 at 8pm. We will not have a meeting next week . Also, we want to have some vegan desserts at the movie, so make what you can and please bring it! This is also a reminder to bring blankets, pillows, or anything else you may want to in order to make your movie-viewing experience the ultimate movie viewing experience. We are also planning a trip to Greatest Grains on Saturday at 3pm for anyone who may be interested in purchasing food for the movie night, or if you just need to pick something else up. We will meet in Java at 3pm and then depart to the store from there. Come if you want, bring what you can, and have a great week everyone!

1/10/06

We are still interested in going to Niabi Zoo to visit our camel! We are going to wait until the spring. We will show the film "Babe" on Tuesday, January 24th at 8 pm in Olin 302. Please bring vegan snacks to share! Pajamas and blankets are welcome! Invite your friends to come as well! There are rumors that chocolate mousse and peanut butter rice crispie squares will be present. T-shirt orders will commence tomorrow and end on Thursday. Each is $10 and payment is REQUIRED AT TIME OF ORDERING. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the "Why I'm A Vegetarian" page on our website! It looks GREAT! Those who aren't on it yet are still welcome to submit. We are going to try to set up a lunch meeting with Dr. Vivian, who has been a vegetarian much longer than I have even been an idea. Whoa. Details to come. Lunch will likely be make-your-own-sandwich, supplemented by Matt's Orgasmic Dip™, pending his compliance.

1/3/06

We will be having a movie night in place of out meeting on Tuesday, January 24th, hopefully in the science building. We will be showing "Babe" at 8pm, and vegan desserts will be served. Please provide food if you can! We will also be selling t-shirts next week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 11-2. We need people to table, so please let us know if you are willing and available. Also, we would like to post some more stories under our "why we are vegetarians" section on our webpage. It doesn't have to be anything long or detailed, just a little blurb of why you gave up meat. If you are unsure, check out the ones that are up there--I promise it is painless. That is all for this week. Welcome back everyone!

12/6/05

Hello all fellow AVS members!!! First off, this is your last reminder to pick up your AVS t-shirts in the debate room of Old Main (basement). Please pick them up if you got them. Some future events that we are planning are a possible re-visit to our camel (we will only go in good weather this time), and a movie night sometime in January (we are thinking "Babe"). Don't forget about our xmas party next Tuesday! We are meeting in Java at 7:30 so we can all walk to Matt's house together. So far, we know for sure we will be having some sort of pasta, some delicious pineapple dip and bread, and some banana's foster. It should be a good time, so come if you can! Also, our website is in need of a slight update: if any of you would like to contribute to our "why we're vegetarians" section and tell in a small blip why you became vegetarian, or if any of you have any good recipes you would like to post, email Esther Hicks, and we will get them all up and running. That is all for this week, have a good one!

11/29/05

Welcome back everyone, and I hope that your winter term is going well! At tonight's meeting, we discussed the AVS xmas party. We will be having it at Matt's house on December 13th. We will meet in Java, and at 7:30 all walk over there together. If you can come, make sure you do, as there will be bananas foster and perhaps other veggie food goodness to share! Some other things we talked about was a possible movie night, with Babe coming up as a possible choice. If you have any ideas, just send them in. Also, Dr. Vivian, a long time vegetarian, would like to talk to us about the experience of being a vegetarian. We are thinking sometime in January for this event. Also, on a little side note, Esther will be a vegetarian for 6 years on the 18th, so make sure you wish her a happy veg-day before she runs off to the Chicago diner to eat lots of yummy food in celebration!!!

11/1/05

First off, Happy November everyone! With only a few weeks left of class, AVS is quite busy. The trip to the Niabi Zoo and Greatest Grains has been rescheduled to Saturday, November 12th, with the departure time at app. 3pm. We will be getting supplies at Greatest Grains that is needed for our pre-finals dinner on Sunday, November 13th. Speaking of, we will be tabling for said event from this Friday all through next week, in the hours of 11-1. Stop by if you can! Tickets for the pre-finals dinner will be sold for $3, and we will be taking orders for our t-shirts at that time as well. We are working on getting publicity out for the event, and we will be meeting at 4pm on Friday in the multimedia lab in Olin (next to washroom-1st floor) to work on some mailing letters. Also, we have the opportunity to supply food for the "taste of Augustana" dinner that will take place next Tuesday from 6-8pm in Pepsico. We will be cooking food for this event on Monday night. We will be making some at Matt's house at about 7pm on Monday night--those who are going meet in Java and 7pm so you can walk together! Also, later that same night, Esther is going to be making cake at her house after about 9:45pm. Those interested in hanging out with her can meet in Centennial by cultural events. That is all for now, and have a great week!!!

10/25/05

We have decided on t-shirts, and we are taking orders on sizes currently. The new design will be a Kelly green tee with the print "Kiss me, I'm vegetarian" on it with a veg. design; the tee from last year will be on sale again in a different color--gray with forest green text. Make sure you order yours! They will be $10 each.
Also, remember November 5th is the date for our visit to Niabi Zoo (it's free!), and to Greatest Grains to purchase food for our Finals dinner. Time of departure/location of pickups, will be out soon.
We will also be asking professors for donations to our Finals dinner soon. If you think/know any of your professors may be interested, let us know! Publicity is on it's way out about the dinner, and we will be tabling from Friday of 9th week, throughout all of 10th week, from 11-1.
So that is all I have for this week, have a good one!!!

10/11/05

Seven of us went to Exotic Thai on Monday night and it was a great time. Good food, cute waiter, unvirginating tofu virgins...good times.
Kathleen created an Augustana Vegetarian Society facebook group, so look us up and join!
Sarah and Esther made an AVS phrig for homecoming, so look for it this week at all the homecoming events! It says "eating veggies is sexy" in green spray paint and looks fabulously ghetto. There's even a big hole in the top of the sheet.
Sondra is going to look for a graphic to use for our t-shirts that is a collection of veggies, not just broccoli, because we decided that all our broccoli graphics looked too much like trees.
This week in foodservice, really strange cereal and milk implements were tested.
Next week we will start discussing the Pre-Finals Dinner (Sunday of week 10) in detail. Before the next meeting, try to think of a vegetarian (bonus if it's vegan!) dish you really like. It doesn't have to be a large quantity, just something you like. Ideas include soup, salad, spreads, casseroles, breads, pastas, beverages (non-alcoholic, of course ;) ) and desserts.
We planned an AVS Day o' Fun for Saturday, November 5. We will first go to Niabi Zoo to visit our camel, and then go to Greatest Grains to buy food for our fantastic Pre-Finals Dinner recipes!! More details to come.

9/22/05

Hello AVS members! At this past Tuesday, we received the awesome news that we finally donated $100 to the Humane Society of the United States. We also discussed Homecoming activities, and decided that we would decorate a phrig like we did last year. For those of you that do not know, a phrig is a large blank sheet that we can spray paint with AVS goodness, and then it will be hung up somewhere one campus. It is a good and easy way to participate in homecoming activities, while advertising our awesome group. The President of SGA has contacted Esther in hopes of our group possibly donating food to an event that is being held near the end of the term. As the date approaches, there will be more information about this. We have two volunteers to participate in the weekly food meetings, where you can sit down with people and tell them how the cafeteria food is tasting. This is a good way to get rid of vegetarian options that aren't very tasty, and motivating new animal-friendly dishes. Kristin and Melissa are going to attend them for now, but we may switch off if anyone else would like to participate. The food meetings are from 11:30-12:30 in the college center, and you receive a free lunch as well. We can only have two people attend a meeting, so if you want to eventually get a chance to go, or have any input, let me know and I will relay it to the pres. Other ideas that got passed around the group is a possible visit to our adopted camel at Niabi Zoo. Weekends are free pass in November, so we may be going then, as we like free things. We may also go apple-picking or pumpkin-picking sometime--we are still deciding. If you prefer one or the other, let me know. We are still looking for tshirt ideas--so please email any creative slogans if you have any. Most importantly, we would like to make a trip to Exotic Thai sometime for dinner, and need to know who is interested and their availibility, so PLEASE email me about that. What day and time would be helpful so we can all sit down and enjoy tasty food off campus. That is it for now, have a good week!

9/13/05

Hi everyone! To everyone who attended the first meeting, thanks for coming and welcome to AVS! To everyone who could not make it, we welcome you as well and hope you can attend the events we sponser and still participate even though you are unable to make it to our meetings. On that topic, make sure (if you can), to attend next weeks meeting at JAVA 101 at 8:30PM. At this past weeks meeting, we discussed the basics of the group, our goals, and activities that we will be doing this year. They are as follows:
-Pre-finals dinner (Sunday night before finals week). We will be receiving donated food and cooking some of our own creations. We sell tickets for this event, and quite a few people attend. It is usually held in the Andreen basement.
-World Farm Animal Day (in the fall). We table this event in the college center, and distribute information about the farming industry in relation to animal rights, etc.
-Meat-Out (March 20th). We also table in the college center for this event, getting quite a few people to sign up to give up meat on March 20th.
We will also possibly have a movie night (suggestions are welcome--last year we showed Finding Nemo). We also are probably going to get t-shirts again this year to sell--if you have any ideas of a catchy vegetarian slogan, please email one of the officers--last years was "Eating Vegetable is Sexy". There are also food service meetings in the college center once a week where we can input our opinion on the variety of vegetarian options offered in the cafeterias--if you are interested in going to these, or have any input, let us know.
Finally (and I apologize for this being sooo long), we are currently in the process of donating money to the Louisiana Humane society or some other animal shelter in the south that is working so hard to save animals in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. So there you go. Have a good week and hopefully we will see some of you at next week's meeting!

2004-2005

4/26/05

The dinner we auctioned off at the Coffeehouse Auction a few months ago will be served THIS WEDNESDAY, at 7 pm.
We will do a bunch of pre-cooking THIS TUESDAY, starting at 6:30 pm, at Matt's house. If you need directions, email spmoore. Please note that this will be in place of the regular 8:30 pm meeting.
NEXT TUESDAY we will have an end of the year party, probably at Matt's house (kitties!). It will likely feature a flaming dessert and a sketchy movie. Email me with any suggestions.
We also need to vote on officers for next year. Positions are president, vice president, secretary, treasurer, community coordinator and parliamentarian. Each position has its merits, especially a place for your name and picture on the AVS website!

4/12/05

We are going to Exotic Thai Monday the 18th. We will be leaving at 5:30pm. Feel free to bring your friends. If you plan on attending and need a ride, email me. Also let me know if you are bringing any friends that need a ride.
Pictures from this weekend's trip to the zoo are posted on the website. Check out our camel! http://www.augustana.edu/studentlife/groups/AVS/
That's all for this week. Our next meeting will be Tuesday the 19th at 8:30 in Java.

4/5/05

T-shirts are ready to be picked up! Someone will be contacting all the people that ordered them as soon as we get them.
This Saturday we are taking a trip to Niabi Zoo to visit our camel. It is a free day at the zoo. We are leaving from Andreen at 1:15pm. After the zoo we will be going to Greatest Grains.
Monday April 18th we are going to Exotic Thai. We will be going around 5:30pm. Invite all of your friends!
The people who bought our dinner at the auction are still coming up with a date for us to come cook for them, so details on that will be coming soon.

3/8/05

We need a new food rep. The meetings are Tuesday and you get free lunch. Is anyone interested?
The Coffeehouse Auction and Meatout are quickly approaching. We will be going shopping for supplies this Saturday at 3pm, and we will be baking in the Andreen basement after that. Everyone is welcome to help.
For the Coffeehouse Auction we will also be auctioning off a dinner part for 4-6 people made by AVS.
We will be tabling next week in the College Center from 11am to 1pm. If you are available and would like to table, let me know.
At the table we will have a sign up for buying t-shirts. They are $10, and must be paid in advance. Tell your friends!
Don't forget that on Friday, March 18 we will be viewing Finding Nemo and eating yummy desserts in Science 304. The movie starts at 7pm. Publicity will be going up around campus soon. Bring your friends!
Finally, we will be going to Chicago this term to go to the Chicago Diner, a delicious entirely vegetarian/vegan restaurant, and we also plan on visiting Lincoln Park Zoo. Possible dates are April 9, May 7, or May 14. These are all Saturdays. If you would like to go, please let me know which date is best for you.

2/15/05

We will be tabling week 2 of Spring term from 11a to 1p for the Meatout. Who can table then?
We will be showing Finding Nemo on March 18th in Science 304, start spreading the word!
For the coffee house auction, we hope to donate a dinner to be cooked in the winning bidder's home. We will also be making a dessert for them to serve, probably chocolate cake...mmm...chocolate cake...
Anybody want to go to Greatest Grains and/or then help bake yummy food? These exciting activities will be taking place March 12th.
That's it for this week, have a great week 10 and good luck on finals!

2/8/05

We decided that we will sell the same "Eating Vegetables is Sexy" shirts while we are tabling for the Meatout. People will sign up and pre-pay.
We decided to show Finding Nemo Friday the 18th at 7pm to celebrate the Meatout. We are trying to get an auditorium in the Science Building, otherwise we will use a classroom in Olin. We brainstormed some ideas of different desserts to make.
We will be making a trip to Greatest Grains on March 12th to buy supplies for the Coffeehouse Auction dessert that we are going to donate, as well as to buy supplies for the Meatout.

2/1/05

We discussed the vegetarian food options at the food fair.
We are still waiting to hear from the zoo about our camel.
AVS is planning on donating a dessert to the auction for the QC Domestic Violence Advocacy Program. We also discussed the possibility of auctioning off an AVS meal.
Plans for the Meatout: We plan on showing either Finding Nemo or Shark Tale either in a classroom in Olin or in an auditorium in the science building so that we can have our yummy desserts.
We will be tabling the entire week before (March 14-18) to get people to sign up to participate.
We will also have an order form for t-shirts at the table. We discussed the possibility of redesigning the t-shirts, the same saying, but a different style of shirt.
