The Augustana Vegetarian Society Constitution


Mission Statement: The Augustana Vegetarian Society exists to provide a supportive and safe environment for vegetarians on the Augustana campus. We believe in providing education for the promotion of vegetarian lifestyles and animal rights issues in the campus and surrounding community.



Article I- Membership

Membership is open to any student on the Augustana campus who is interested in and/or supportive of vegetarianism. To have voting rights, a person must have regular attendance at group meetings, defined as two meetings a term.

Article II- Offices of the Group

1. President- The President shall serve as the head of the organization. The President is responsible for the running of weekly meetings, being a spokesperson for the group, and coordinating group events. The President is also responsible for contacting the Food Service Committee for the purposes of informing the committee of whom the group's representative will be.

2. Vice President- The Vice-President shall fill in for the President when she or he cannot attend a meeting. The Vice President is also responsible for assisting the President in events coordination and running of weekly meetings.

3. Treasurer- The treasurer shall be the handler of the group's funds. She or he is responsible for keeping track of the group's budget, providing regular reports on the financial status of the group, and the group's monetary transactions.

4. Communications Coordinator- The Communications Coordinator is responsible for public relations to the campus and local community. The Communications Coordinator is also responsible for taking minutes of each meeting and sending them to members via email. The Communications Coordinator is also responsible for keeping an updated contact list of all members of the group.

5. Food Service Representative- The Food Service Representative shall attend the weekly Food Service meetings and the group meetings to serve as a liaison between the two. The Food Service Representative will serve as the group's voice at the Food Service meeting.

6. Parliamentarian (Sergeant at Arms) Parliamentarian is to be responsible for keeping general order at meetings.

Article III- Elections and Terms of Office

1. Terms- Each office is elected for a one-year, renewable term. A person can serve as any officer as many times as she or he is elected to the office.

2. Qualifications- Officers must be an active member of the group and be in good standing with the college.

3. Elections- Elections for all offices, except for the Food Service Representative, will be held in the Spring term of each year. The Food Service Representative will be appointed by the group in the fall term of each year.

4. Election Process- To be elected for a position a student must be nominated by a group member and receive a majority of the votes cast. If no majority is reached then the person receiving the lowest number of votes will be removed from consideration and a vote will be taken amongst the remaining candidates until someone receives a majority of the votes.
