    Dr. James Winship

James A. Winship is Professor of Political Science at Augustana College in Rock Island, Illinois. He came to Augustana in 1975 and chaired the political science department from 1983 - 1992. He currently chairs the social science division at the college. Dr. Winship was named William Freistat Professor of Studies in World Peace in 1993 and has served as Director of Augustana's Freistat Endowment for International Peace Studies since its inception in 1986.

Dr. Winship teaches courses in international relations and American foreign policy, as well as comparative politics of
East Asia and the Middle East. In 1994 he was named a Joseph J. Malone Fellow by the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations. During the 1989-90 academic year he taught at the Johns Hopkins University-Nanjing University Center for Chinese and American Studies in Nanjing, People's Republic of China. Dr. Winship also serves as Co-Director of Augustana's East Asian term and in that capacity makes frequent return trips to Japan and China. Though much of his work focuses on the international involvements of the United States, Dr. Winship is also a close student of the American political process and teaches courses on campaigns and elections.

Dr. Winship received his Ph.D. in political science and international studies from The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore,
Maryland. His undergraduate degree is also from Johns Hopkins, and his Master's degree in international studies is from The Johns Hopkins University's Nitze School of Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C. In addition to his interest in political science, Dr. Winship is an ordained minister in the United Church of Christ and holds the Master of Divinity (M.Div.) degree from Harvard Divinity School, Cambridge, Massachusetts. Given this dual training, he has a particular interest in the interplay of politics and religion in American life and in international relations.

Dr. Winship has recently been a Mid-West Faculty Fellow with the Globalization Project of the Center for International Studies and the Chicago Humanities Institute at the University of Chicago. He is also a fellow of the Carnegie Council on Ethics and International Affairs. Dr. Winship spent the summer of 1997 in
Hong Kong researching the emergent politics of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region as that territory was returned to Chinese sovereignty after more than 150 years of British rule. He has had several extended trips to the East Asia - in 1998, where he continued his research into U.S. foreign policy in the region, another in 2000, and an extended trip in fall 2001 that took him to both Japan and China.
