I take an active role in advising student groups and feel the learning experience in these organizations can be more powerful than classroom experiences. All three organizations draw top-academic students from across the disciplines that reflect the core values of the liberal arts.
Augustana Web Clique, since 1997
This group develops and maintains the highly successful Augustana College website. The team of 12 to 15 students includes writers, designers, developers, and programmers. The group reflects the ethos of the college to involve students as a critical element in the structure and voice of the institution.
Augustana Web Authors Guild, since 1998
This organization was started with the goal of promoting web use on the Augustana campus through training and professional development. To achieve their goals and supply the opportunities that the members are looking for, the Guild operates a web development business. The business primarily serves the local not-for-profit community and has been doing so since its inception. The Guild has made it possible for many organizations to have a web presence by providing affordable services for these organizations that operate on minimal budgets. This group has become well known in the Quad Cities for its service and may be one of the best public relations tools that the college currently has with local opinion leaders.
Through my mentorship, the organization provides its members a place to learn web development, a chance to experience the entrepreneurial spirit, excellent portfolio building, internship and job opportunities, the opportunity to fill leadership positions, a social outlet, and a strong feeling of self-worth by serving the campus community as well as the local not-for-profit community.
Advertising Developers (ADs), since 2000
ADs is a chapter of the AAF (American Advertising Federation, a national professional organization) dedicated to the development of student understanding of advertising and marketing communication. The chapter focuses on the professional development of its members through programming, networking, portfolio building, social functions, and mentorship. Programming includes preparation of a competitive case study for the National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC), professional speakers, analyzing commercials, and practical experience.
My expertise and passion for advertising had me looking for the right opportunity to share this with students. The National Student Advertising Competition was the vehicle to bring together students that are looking for intellectual challenge. With the vision that the appeal of the organization was across the academic spectrum, students were recruited from all majors.
The main activity is participation in the National Student Advertising Competition (NSAC) which is a group project that takes most of the school year to complete. The group receives a case study from a real client ( Toyota, Florida) and prepares a full advertising/communications plan. The skills required for this competition are across the curriculum, which is why this student organization epitomizes the core values and disciplines of a liberal arts education. |
