Tara and Julia talk with Rastas Ray-I and Charlie during the recent Augustana Jamaica Program trip to the island. This snapshot, showing Augie students immersed in and engaging with a new culture, is perhaps indicative of the “inter-cultural competence” learning outcome the College has adopted. As a Gen Ed Committee member since 2010, I have contributed to the Committee’s initiative to reframe Augie’s current diversity requirement (D and G, which might be viewed as knowledge-based) as an Inter-Cultural Competence requirement (ICC, which we hope will become skills-based). My own experience in fostering engagement across cultures both within the United States (via my LSFY 103 course) and outside of the U.S. (via the Jamaica program) lends insight to my committee contributions. |
Service (2013) |
My pattern of service to the college first articulated in 2009 and 2011 has perhaps intensified over the past two years. Some of my more substantial contributions have included: · Successfully shepherding the secondary mathematics teaching program to National Recognition status with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. The process involved the preparation and submission of an initial 85-page report and a follow-up report of 88 pages. · Serving on the Gen Ed committee since 2010 (I recently began my second consecutive 3-year term). I have taken on leadership responsibilities within the committee, recently taking on the chairmanship of the sub-committee overseeing the proposed transition from the D & G suffix requirements toward a new inter-cultural competence (ICC) requirement. · Voluntarily serving as the Education Department’s “edTPA Coordinator.” The edTPA is a standardized portfolio assessment of student teacher performance. It will be a requirement for teacher licensure in Illinois beginning 2015. As edTPA coordinator, I serve as the liaison between Augustana, Pearson (the publisher of edTPA), and the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). I am responsible for communicating updates to edTPA expectations and state-mandated requirements to Augie faculty and students. · Serving as Augustana’s Teacher Licensure Officer since 2012. This position is compensated with a course release. Responsibilities include keeping abreast of ISBE teacher licensure regulations, undergoing training with ISBE every year, verifying that Augustana graduates are eligible for licensure and endorsements, and assisting Augustana graduates transfer their credentials to other states. |

I have missed only one meeting of the senate during my tenure...this was due to a family obligation. · Faculty Advisor to three student clubs: Club Ed, Cooking Club, and Opportunity Kicks Tutoring · Summer Connection Advisor in 2012 and 2013 · Have led two professional development sessions for Augustana colleagues, including a presentation to LSFY faculty on helping students develop intrinsic motivation to write on 1/21/13 and a session during the May 22, 2013 Blended Learning Boot Camp on providing students audio-visual feedback on papers · Served on the Search Committee for the Associate Dean of Curricular Engagement, Spring 2013 · Continual contributions to student recruitment efforts. This includes 15 Honors interviews over the past two years; participated in 6 formal recruitment fairs over the past two years (these events occurred on Saturdays and summer days); met individually with several prospective students and their families; welcomed prospective students to my classes |
