TEAcHING (2013) |
The courses I taught during my first three years at Augustana were all required courses for education majors in the teacher education program. During the past two years my teaching responsibilities have expanded into the college-wide core curriculum. I have designed and taught a section of LSFY 103 and also a Learning Community carrying the PH and G designations. Further information about my courses, related SRI data, and evidence of student learning from the courses can be accessed via the links below. My section of LSFY 103, taught in 2012 and 2013, is unique in that it is the only LSFY course on campus that also carries Augustana’s official Service-Learning designation. Shared readings and discussions focus on urban school issues in the United States, and students interact directly with urban schools via a weekly volunteer commitment in west Rock Island and exchanges with a south Chicago high school. |
The required coursework for Augie Jamaica Program participants, this 4-credit, Service-Learning LC is designed to address three developmental themes: Context, Immersion, and Reflection. The Context section occurred during weeks 1-5 of the ‘12-13 winter term, and provided students with cultural, historical, and political background about the island. Immersion occurred during the Christmas break when students traveled to the island and engaged in a 1-credit Service-Learning experience in Kingston. Weeks 6-10 focused on Reflecting on the Jamaican experience and applying lessons learned from the experience to our lives moving forward as socially concerned world citizens. |
I continue to help prepare future teachers in Augustana’s teacher education program via the computers in education course, mathematics teaching methods courses for elementary and secondary teachers, student teaching supervision, and the student teaching seminar. Randy Hengst and I have also begun to formalize our supervision of juniors who participate year-round in the Number Sense Project by enabling them to earn directed study credit (1 credit per term) for the experience. |
I have worked as an academic advisor during each academic year since I arrived in 2008. During my first year on campus, I took on advising duties for students who declared the mathematics/secondary education major that year. I have also served as an advisor of first-year students every year since 2009-2010. I am typically responsible for about 40 advisees at any given time, and I meet individually with each of them at least once per term. |
