The Augustana Fencing Club was founded in 1998 by student Keith Toms. He taught fencing technique in a casual atmosphere with little requirements for club members. In continuing years, upperclassmen would pass on the education that they learned as freshmen.
The year of 2004 held two landmarks for the Augustana Fencing Club. The club bought an electric strip and held its first intra-club electric tournament. In that same year, Greg Weinberg became president of the club. He changed the club by creating a definite teaching plan for the year.
In 2005, AFC was able to purchase more electric equipment and hold another intra-club tournament. The 2005-2006 year was another impressive year for the Augustana Fencing Club. Jon Fisher, Jeff Noethlich, Carsen Rodeback, and Jess Schlueter were able to achieve type two sport status, obtain more equipment, and set a record number of incoming freshmen fencers. Club members traveled to numerous tournaments, and younger members tagged along to cheer them on. The greatest milestone for the club occurred in the fall of the year when the Augustana Fencing Club held its first inter-school electric tournament.
