How Big is a Bug ?

This experiment illustrates the differences in size between bacterial cells and virus particles - a classic microbiology experiment.

You have been given the following reagents:

• nitrocellulose filter, pore size 0.2 µm (200nm)
• mixed suspension of bacteriophage l (lambda) and Staphylococcus epidermidis
  (S. epidermidis is not susceptible to infection by l phage)
• 5ml syringe
• disposable spreader
• nutrient agar plates
• sterile tubes
• phage dilution buffer
