Augustana women’s basketball team notches five wins and continues to show improvement under second year head coach Bobbi Endress
Senior Becky Rehn (Orion HS, Osco, Ill.) was named the “Most Valuable Player” for the 2007-08 Augustana women’s basketball team. Rehn, a senior guard, averaged a team high 10.1 points per contest and started 22 of 25 games this past season. She dished out a team leading 81 assists and was a strong shooter from the free throw line, connecting on 75.7 percent (53-70) of her attempts. She shot 36.0 percent (87-242) from the floor and made 28.7 percent (25-87) of her three point field goal tries. Rehn led the team in minutes played, averaging 28.6 per contest and was a third team selection to the CCIW All-Conference squad. She also earned the “Defensive Award” after leading the team in steals with 73 thefts on the year. Rehn was second on the squad with 113 rebounds, grabbing 4.5 per game. She was third on the team with six blocks.
Augustana finished its second season under head coach Bobbi Endress with an overall record of 5-20 and a 3-11 mark in College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin play. It marked a one game improvement in the overall record from last season and a two game increase in CCIW victories. The Vikings defeated Northland 57-49 at the Lakeland Tournament and knocked off Aurora 67-58 at the Roy J. Carver P.E. Center during the non-conference portion of the season. Augustana earned CCIW road wins against Wheaton (59-56) and North Park (70-59). The women were also 56-52 winners at home against North Central.
Senior Cindy Kastning (North Boone HS, Capron, Ill.) earned the “Most Improved” award after starting 17 of the 24 games that she played this past season. She scored 4.8 points per game and averaged 15.8 minutes of playing time per contest. Kastning snared 96 rebounds, an average of 4.0 per game. She proved to be very reliable from the charity stripe, connecting on 72.2 percent (52-72) of her free throw attempts. Kastning finished with 11 steals, eight assists, and five blocks. She shot 31.3 percent (31-99) from the floor. Kastning also received the “Coach’s Award” for her hard work and dedication to the team this past season.
Seniors Tracy Dianis (Hinsdale Central HS, Hinsdale, Ill.) and Katie Engwall (Aledo HS, Aledo, Ill.) shared the “Viking Award” in their final season with the Augustana program. Engwall played in all 25 games, including 22 as a starter, and was second on the squad with a 7.6 scoring average. She connected on 75.7 percent (56-74) of her free throw attempts and shot 32.1 percent (61-190) from the floor. Engwall grabbed 48 rebounds, made 23 steals, and dished out 20 assists. Dianis played in 13 contests and made one start. She finished with nine rebounds, three assists, and two steals.
Senior Maegan Skahill (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange, Ill.) was the recipient of the “Windex Award” as the team’s top rebounder. She led the Vikings with 146 rebounds, averaging a team high 5.8 per contest. Skahill produced 90 defensive rebounds and also snatched 56 on the offensive end, leading the team in both categories. She also finished third on the team with a 7.4 scoring average, shooting 38.3 percent (77-201) from the field. Skahill had a team leading 25 blocks and added 38 assists.
Junior Sarah Rachwalski (Amos Alonzo Stagg HS, Palos Hills, Ill.) continued to be a valued member of the team again this season, starting 19 of 25 contests and scoring 6.3 points per game. She was second on the team with 49 assists and also second in minutes played, averaging 28.5 per contest. Rachwalski was third on the Vikings in overall field goal percentage, making 41.9 percent (57-136) of her shots from the floor. She grabbed 94 rebounds and collected 34 steals.
Junior Sarah Miers (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) played in 24 games and made five starts. She averaged 6.4 points per game and collected 65 rebounds. Miers was the lone Viking to make over half of her shots from the floor, hitting 52.7 percent (68-129) of her overall attempts.
Freshman Ashley Skowronski (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.) led a solid freshmen class in minutes played, averaging 17.6 per game. She played in 24 contests and made two starts in her first season as a Viking. Skowronski grabbed 81 rebounds, made 34 steals, and had 19 assists. She averaged 4.0 points per game and was second on the team with eight blocks. Freshman Jeanelle Strohmaier (Genoa-Kingston HS, Genoa, Ill.) also performed well in her first season at Augustana, playing in all 25 games and making a pair of starts. She averaged 4.1 points per game, snared 74 rebounds, and shot 42.9 percent (42-98) from the field. Freshman Alyssa Neitzel (Providence Catholic HS, Shorewood, Ill.) appeared in all 25 games as a reserve, averaging 12.0 minutes per contest. She made 31.0 percent (18-58) of her shots from beyond the arc and had a scoring average of 2.6 points. Freshman Lisa Smith (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.) also played in all 25 games and made two starts for Augustana. She had 19 rebounds, 16 assists, and scored 12 points.
