2008-09 Season - 2001-02 WOMEN'S TENNIS REVIEW

At CCIW Tournament, Christine Spencer & Kristy Pence each finish second in singles while number one doubles team of Lindsay Clarke and Spencer place second; Vikings finish third in team standings with 39 points

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois - It was a successful women's tennis season that was just finished by the Augustana Vikings. Co-head coaches Todd Creal and Josh Baldridge had to be happy after their Vikings finished the 2001 campaign on a positive note with a third place finish in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin tournament on Friday and Saturday, October 19-20. Wheaton won the meet, which was held at Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Illinois with 65 points. Carthage was second with 63 points and Augustana was a solid third with 39 points.

It was a remarkable year for the Vikings, who did not know who their coach would be until the end of August. With Creal handling the administrative duties and Baldridge taking the day-to-day practice chores, the arrangement worked well. After a rocky start, the Blue & Gold was 2-3 after losing to Wheaton on September 22. That same day, however, the Vikings beat Elmhurst 9-0 and that started a stretch that saw them win seven of their last eight matches. The strong drive to the end allowed Creal and Baldridge's charges to finish the 2001 season with a 9-4 overall record and a 5-2 mark in the CCIW. It was the ninth consecutive winning record for Augustana, dating back to an 11-11 mark in 1992-93 under the direction of Larry Flaherty.

The leading finishers in the CCIW Tournament were senior Christine Spencer (Wheeling HS, Arlington Heights, IL) and freshman Kristy Pence (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, IL) who both pulled down second placer performances. At number two singles Spencer lost in the finals to Rachel Zorn of Wheaton by a score of 6-2; 6-3. She got to the championship match by beating Amy Nelson of Millikin 6-1; 6-0 in the first round and Christine Hamm of Carthage 6-2; 6-2 in the semifinals. Spencer finished the season with a 9-6 record. Pence was superb all season long and she didn't drop off much at the conference tournament. She opened play with an easy 6-0; 6-0 victory over Zheralyn Zabat of Elmhurst and then advanced to the finals by defeating Alison Oliver of Illinois Wesleyan 7-6 (7-2); 6-1. In the finals Pence won the first set 7-6 (7-5), lost the second 6-7 (6-8) and finally the third 4-6. She was 13-3 in her first collegiate season.

Junior Lindsay Clarke (Chatham Glenwood HS, Chatham, IL) placed third at number one singles and was 12-7 for the year. Clarke beat Deanna Dechler of Illinois Wesleyan 7-5; 6-2 in the first round before dropping a 6-3; 6-7; 4-6 decision to Kari Jorgensen of Wheaton in the semi-finals. In the playback round Clarke beat Lindsey Killion of North Central 8-1 and then took the measure of Anja Doody of Millikin in the third place match 8-6.

Also placing third for Augustana was Christina Seaba (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, IA) at number four. Seaba beat Carrie Holgate of Elmhurst 3-6; 6-2; 6-1 in the first round before losing to Helen Culbertson of Wheaton 4-6; 3-6 in the semifinals. Seaba defeated Anwaar Judeh of North Central 8-2 and then beat Krista Vogel of Illinois Wesleyan 8-0 for third place. She had an 11-8 record for the year.

Brijan Knapp (Urbana HS, Urbana, IL) won a match at number three singles but did not place and Kristin Wolschlag (Peoria Manual HS, Peoria, IL) did the same at number six singles. Knapp was 6-10 this year and Wolschlag ended up 7-6.

The top doubles finish for the Vikings came from the number one team of Spencer and Clarke who finished second, losing to Christine Hamm and Kristine Mavendyke of Carthage 6-2; 6-2 in the finals. Spencer and Clarke won two matches to get to the finals and were 9-7 on the year. The second doubles team of Knapp and Pence placed third and was 12-3 this year while the number three unit of Seaba and Jennifer Belsha (Palatine HS, Palatine, IL) was 11-5 and fourth in the conference.
