NASA researcher to speak on monitoring polar ice

January  20, 2014

Dr. Lora Koenig of the Cryospheric Sciences Laboratory at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center will discuss NASA missions that monitor the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets at 7 p.m. Jan. 23.

The free public lecture will be in the John Deere Lecture Hall inside the John Deere Planetarium building.

Dr. Koenig is an expert in remote sensing of ice sheets and snow. She has spent more than a year in the Arctic and Antarctic to validate satellite measurements and expand algorithms over large areas.

She will focus on the new understanding of Greenland meltwater based on radar data gathered by these missions, and she will discuss the new solar-powered robot – GROVER (Greenland Rover and Goddard Remotely Operated Vehicle for Exploration and Research) – capable of autonomously monitoring accumulation.

The lecture is sponsored by the Augustana Center for Polar Studies.
