A team of Augustana students has been selected to compete in the Allstate APEX case study competition in 2014.

Alex Odenkirk, Ty Benson, David Sommers and Cody Burgdorff will compete against seven other schools beginning Jan. 13. Final presentations are Feb. 24-28.

In the competition, interdisciplinary teams of students work with an Allstate professional to analyze a relevant Allstate business issue. They will work closely with an Allstate advisor over the course of the program to develop an executive-ready presentation for a panel of Allstate's senior leaders.

Sixty-three students on 16 teams are competing this year from Augustana, Illinois Wesleyan, DePaul, Wheaton, Loyola, Illinois State and University of Illinois-Chicago.

All of the teams will present their work to a panel of judges virtually, and then the top three teams will go to Allstate's corporate headquarters in Northbrook, Ill., to present in front of a group of Allstate leadership.

Odenkirk is a junior from Tucson, Ariz., double-majoring in applied mathematics and economics with a minor in computer science. He will be the team captain of the Vikings' men's cross country team next fall.

Sommers is a sophomore majoring in business administration and communication studies. He's from Thousand Oaks, Calif., and is one of the top performers on the men's swimming and diving team. He owns the school record in the 200 butterfly and has the second fastest time in the 100 butterfly.

Benson is a junior from Libertyville, Ill., majoring in business administration/marketing.

Burgdorff is a junior from Lafayette, Colo. He's majoring in economics and accounting.

Benson and Burgdorff both were all-conference performers in men's lacrosse last spring.

There are 16 teams competing this year with a total of 63 students from 7 different schools, including Illinois Wesleyan, DePaul, Wheaton, Loyola, Augustana, Illinois State, and University Illinois-Chicago.

The teams haven't been given their cases yet, but they usually revolve around an area of the business Allstate wishes to improve. Students are asked to find creative ways to provide solutions.
