College wins awards for viewbook, logo

December  16, 2013

The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) has given Augustana College a gold award for Best Graphic Identity/Logo and a bronze award for Best Viewbook in its 2013 Pride of CASE V Awards.

Augustana will be honored at the awards ceremony Dec. 16 during the CASE District V Annual Conference in Chicago.

The annual competition honors institutions of higher education and individuals who demonstrate exceptional achievement in the concept and implementation of advancement programs and communications.

The Augustana Viewbook was produced entirely in-house by the Office of Communication and Marketing. Research began in the fall of 2011, when high school juniors and seniors in Rock Island and in Colorado reviewed and provided feedback to inform the design and content of the new viewbook.

The Augustana employees who worked on these projects are Beth Roberts, editorial director; Meghan Cooley, director of recruitment communications; Marla Alvarado Neuerburg, visual media and production director; and Scott Cason, assistant vice president of communication and marketing. Quan Vi, current creative design director, and Kurt Tucker, the former design director, both were  involved in the viewbook's design. Tucker, now working in Iowa City, led the effort to create the Viking logo.

Some defining features of the viewbook include a focus on four primary distinctions, a "visual" table of contents, and a layout that justifies thorough reading or just glancing over. The "Augie A" used in this book appears throughout admissions' marketing materials, including video and web.

The Augustana Graphic Identity/Logo project also started in 2011, when the concept of creating a graphic identity for the intercollegiate athletics program was founded in "Vikingness." The goal was to create a graphic identity for Augustana athletics that aligns with the college's institutional identity, provides a system for consistent application across men's and women's sports, respects the Augustana athletics tradition, and represents the character and personality of the Augustana student-athlete.

Overall, the viewbook and the graphic identity support the college's ongoing effort to attract students to this 154-year-old private, undergraduate college of the liberal arts and sciences in the Quad Cities.
