Beinborn's Vikings to visit Brazil
ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Second-year Head Coach Mark Beinborn will be taking his Augustana women's basketball team to South America this summer. The Vikings will spend nine days in Brazil, playing three games against local teams, as well as seeing the sights and taking part in service projects. This will be the second international trip for the Augustana program, which visited Greece in June of 2010.
Beinborn and his squad will leave for South America on Sunday, August 4 and arrive in Rio de Janeiro the following morning. The team will be staying at the Astoria Palace on the famous Copacabana beach. Team members will be free to explore the local sights during the first day of their stay.
On Tuesday, the Vikings will take part in their first service project, in conjunction with the Tijuca Tennis Club. The club supports many sporting activities for underprivileged children. That evening will see Augustana play its first game.
Later in the week, the Vikings will visit Sugarloaf Mountain and the Christ the Redeemer statue on Corcovado Mountain before playing their second contest of the tour on Thursday, August 8.
The second half of the trip will include a boating tour of the tropical islands 90 minutes south of Rio de Janeiro and two more free days for the players to explore Rio on their own. The Vikings will also be conducting a basketball camp at a local community center for underprivileged children on August 11 and will play their final game on Monday, August 12.
The club will depart for the United States on August 13 and arrive home on Wednesday, August 14.
