Old Main finished; CSL, athletic complex progressing

May  30, 2013

New construction projects — the Center for Student Life and the Austin E. Knowlton Athletic Complex — continue this summer at Augustana, while a third project, the interior renovation of Old Main, is complete.

The college has received a certificate of occupancy from the City of Rock Island for the renovated Old Main, two weeks ahead of schedule. Old Main faculty will begin moving things into their new office spaces in mid-June. Graduating seniors toured the building a few days before commencement.  (Video)

Old Main was built from 1882 to 1889 and modeled after the main building at Uppsala University in Sweden. The interior renovation took nearly a year. In 2011, the exterior was renovated and the dome restored. (Old Main history)

The Austin E. Knowlton Athletic Complex takes shape.

The general contractor and subcontractors are working on a schedule recovery/impact plan after an 18-day strike at the site. United Brotherhood of Carpenters Local 4, Davenport, and Local 166, Milan, failed to reach a new contract agreement with the Quad-City Builders Association. The strike was settled May 18.

Foundation work on the building is continuing from east to west. Crews are working in the team meeting and locker room area. Concrete masonry units (CMU) construction has started on east end, and is just about completed in the grandstand area.

Underground utility work is complete. Structural steel erection is complete in the grandstand area and will continue as foundations are available.

Center for Student Life

Ground was broken on May 10, 2012 for the new $20 million Center for Student Life  connected to the Thomas Tredway Library. The center adds 35,000 square feet and two new functions — dining services and student activities. Some 39,000 square feet of library space has been renovated.

Masonry on the south side is done and workers have moved around the corner to the southwest area to complete the final area this week.

On the northwest corner, workers have excavated and poured the piers for the exterior service stairway. In the same area, excavation for the new loading dock has started and will be poured this week.

Mechanical and electrical connections to the new kitchen equipment are going in on the 5th floor east food service area. The stained floor is completed.

On the 5th floor addition in the north kitchen area the epoxy floor is completed and has been covered to protect the finish until it is turned over for use.

Final lighting is installed in this area on schedule. The first loads of kitchen equipment for this area are arriving this week.

On the south portion of 5th floor workers are framing, drywall and taping. Painting is moving along on schedule. The main mechanical, HVAC, electrical and fire protection rough-in has been completed in this area. Workers will continue with the mechanical/electrical trim-out work as the ceilings and painting are completed.

On the 4th floor addition, framing, drywall and taping is underway and the mechanical/electrical work is progressing. Painting is still a few weeks away in this area. Both of the new elevators are complete and waiting for inspection.

The new fireplace was delivered and installed this week. Masonry will start on the  face of the fireplace next week.

If the weather holds, the final excavating on the west elevation will start this week and will continue until completed, sometime next week. The project is on schedule for completion in mid-August.
