Kierra Smith All-American in 400 hurdles

Junior Kierra Smith (Creston HS, Creston, Iowa) nearly broke her own school record as she placed seventh in the 400 intermediate hurdles and hauled in NCAA Division III All-American honors. She ran a time of 1:01.63 in the finals, which was just off her personal best of 1:01.56 set three weeks ago at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin meet.
She was the ninth fastest qualifier heading into the finals off her preliminary time of 1:01.70 in Thursday's trials. The winner of the event was Heather Gearity of Montclair State who ran :59.31.
The Vikings had two finalists in the 1500 and senior Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) and sophomore Jessica Bacon (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) came up just short in their respective quests for All-American status.
Jones placed ninth with a school record time of 4:29.29, breaking her own mark of 4:31.29 by exactly two seconds while Bacon was right behind her in 10th with a time of 4:32.55. Jones came back later in the meet and finished 11th in the 5000 with a clocking of 17:06.48.
