Vikings rally for 7-6 win over IWU

Chaney Tambling's RBI double in the top of the seventh gave Augustana the lead and the Vikings held on for a 7-6 win over Illinois Wesleyan at the CCIW Tournament.

KENOSHA, Wis.-Third-seed Augustana put four runs on the board in the top of the seventh Friday to knock off second-seeded Illinois Wesleyan 7-6 at the CCIW Softball Tournament at Carthage College. The Vikings improve to 27-12 on the season and now play the winner of the other first round game between top-seeded Carthage and fourth seed North Central.

With a 6-3 lead heading to the top of the seventh, Illinois Wesleyan made a pitching change, calling on Molly McCready in relief of starter Alyssa Vorel. Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) started the frame by working McCready for a walk. Laura Behnke (St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) followed with an RBI double to center to cut the deficit to 6-4.

At that point, Vorel re-entered the circle for the Titans, but Chelsea Lavin (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) touched her for a double that plated Behnke and one out later, Jamie Rehmert (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) was hit by a pitch. Cheynne Burnett's (Rock Falls HS, Rock Falls, Ill.) followed with a single to left that scored Lavin with the tying run and after a fielder's choice accounted for the second out of the inning, Chaney Tambling (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) doubled down the left field line, delivering pinch runner Lisa Bartha (Glenbard South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) with the go-ahead run.

Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.), who came on to start the fifth, retired the Titans in the bottom of the seventh and earned her 10th win of the season against just four losses. She gave up one hit and a pair of walks in her three innings.

Each team scored once in the first and twice in the second before IWU scored three in the third to take a 6-3 lead.

Behnke had a triple and a double and Lavin a pair of doubles for the Vikings. Behnke scored twice and Lavin drove in two runs. Tambling had two hits as well, including the game-winning two-bagger in the seventh.

Coach Kris Kistler's club plays next at 4:00 p.m. on Friday against the winner of the Carthage-North Central first round game.
