Vikings top Grinnell 9-2

First baseman Grant Stewart had a pair of hits, including a double, and drove in three runs Wednesday as 21st-ranked Augustana defeated Grinnell 9-2 at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field.

MOLINE, Ill.-Five Vikings rapped out two hits each Wednesday as Augustana picked up a 9-2 non-conference win over Grinnell at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. The 21st-ranked Vikings improve to 27-8 this season, while the Pioneers fall to 13-19.

Augustana used an error and a misplayed fly ball to put a run on the board in the bottom of the first. Danny Fifer (Lincoln-Way West HS, New Lenox, Ill.) reach second on a one-out error and came around to score when Grant Stewart's (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) fly to left dropped in for an RBI single.  

The hosts went up 6-0 with five in the third. Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) singled in Jacob Van Duyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.) with the first run. Stewart followed with a two-run double to left center. After Nick Tenerelli (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) was hit by a pitch, Mark VanNatta (Alleman HS, Moline, Ill.) came through with an RBI double to right. John Swiderski's (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) sacrifice fly to center scored Tenerelli with the final run of the inning.  

Meanwhile, Viking starter Jared McIntosh (Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) worked six innings, allowing just a pair of runs on Ryan Penaflor's fifth-inning single.  

Augustana added single runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings. Tenerelli had an RBI double in the fifth. Fifer singled in a run in the sixth and Schmidt knocked in a run with a single in the eighth.  

Fifer, Schmidt, Stewart, Tenerelli and VanNatta each had two hits. Schmidt scored twice and drove in a pair. Stewart knocked in three on the night. McIntosh got the win to improve to 6-3 on the season. Freshman right-hander Brandon Bollman (Lincoln-Way East HS, Frankfort, Ill.) went the final three innings, allowing just one hit while fanning three. He retired the last eight Pioneers he faced and picked up his first save.  

Coach Greg Wallace's club wraps up the CCIW schedule with a three-game set at Millikin this weekend. The teams start the series with a single game on Friday, May 3 at 6:00 p.m. in Decatur, Illinois.
