Palmer wins "Player of the Week" for second time this year

Sophomore Lawrence Palmer, winner of his last six matches and 10 of his last 11, has been named the "Player of the Week" in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin for the second time this season.

For the second time this season, Augustana sophomore Lawrence Palmer (Schiller International School, El Prat de Llobregat, Spain) has been selected as the "Player of the Week" in the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin in men's tennis. Palmer, who has been red-hot of late, was undefeated last week in seven matches.

He went 3-0 at number one singles and 4-0 at number one doubles with junior Andy Wall (Notre Dame Academy, De Pere, Wis.) as his partner. In singles he started the week with a 6-1; 6-0 victory over Chris Franco of Monmouth on April 9 and one day later he beat Garrett Russikoff of Cornell 6-1; 7-5. He ended the week with a 7-5; 7-5 triumph over Brian Sorich of Illinois Wesleyan.

Palmer and Wall took care of David Johnson and David Stewart of Monmouth 9-7 on April 9. They beat Russikoff and Orion Wilkinson of Cornell 8-3 on April 10. On Saturday, April 13, Palmer and Wall beat Sorich and Nick Kenaga of Illinois Wesleyan 8-4 and then took care of Francisco Cortez and Agustin Villallon of Webster 8-2.

So far this season Palmer is 16-8 at number one singles and he has won his last six matches and 10 of his last 11. His only loss during that stretch was to regionally ranked Noah Sprinkle of Coe on March 16. At one point this year, on February 24, Palmer was 4-6 in singles.

Palmer and Wall have compiled a record of 15-7 while playing at number one doubles and they currently have an eight match winning streak that dates back to March 23.

Augustana is currently 15-7 overall and 2-0 in the CCIW and the Vikings are ranked 18th in the NCAA Division III's Central Region.

A year ago Palmer was a second team all-conference selection and finished the season with a 9-11 record in singles while playing mostly at number two. He posted a 12-11 overall doubles mark. For his career he is 35-19 in singles and 28-22 in doubles for an overall record of 63-41. A multimedia journalism and mass communications major, Palmer was also named the "Player of the Week" in the CCIW back on March 13.
