Viking hitters have a huge day

Senior second baseman Kurt Schmidt went five for five with a home run Sunday as 25th-ranked Augustana wrapped up play in Florida with a 16-1 win over Anderson.

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. - Seniors Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) and Mark VanNatta (Alleman HS, Moline, Ill.) and sophomore Danny Fifer (Lincoln-Way West HS, New Lenox, Ill.) accounted for 14 of Augustana's 19 hits Sunday as the 25th-ranked Vikings defeated Anderson 16-1. Augustana finishes play in Florida with a 10-2 record, while Anderson falls to 2-6 on the year.

Augustana jumped out in front with a four-run third and really exploded late, scoring three, four and five runs in the fifth through seventh innings to end the game early.  

Schmidt went five for five with his first home run of the season and a pair of stolen bases. He scored four times and drove in four as well. VanNatta was also five for five with three doubles, two runs scored and three driven in. Fifer had a game-high five RBI with four singles in five at-bats. Sophomore Kyle Lenihan (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) also had a big day, going two for three with two walks, four runs scored and two RBI. In addition, senior Jeremy Juhl (Glenbard East HS, Lombard, Ill.) added two hits and two runs scored.  

While the offense was more than doing its part, freshman right-hander Walter White (East Peoria HS, East Peoria, Ill.) went the full seven innings on the mound to improve to 2-0 on the season. He allowed just four singles and one walk, fanning five. The only run he gave up came in the bottom of the sixth, after the Vikings already led 11-0.  

On Friday, March 22, Augustana plays its 2013 home opener at Swanson Stadium/Brunner Field. The Vikings host Monmouth with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
