Ben Ryan regional Rookie of the Year

Augustana forward Ben Ryan has been named 2012-13 Midwest Region Rookie of the Year by

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Augustana's Ben Ryan (Washington HS, Washington, Ill.) has been named Rookie of the Year in the Midwest Region by The website announced its all-region teams Wednesday, with Ryan earning honors as the top first-year player in the Midwest. The 6' 5", 208-pound forward, who was also named Freshman of the Year in the CCIW, was the leading scorer and second-leading rebounder for the 19-8 Vikings this season.

One of eight freshman letter winners for Coach Grey Giovanine this year, Ryan averaged 11.7 points and 6.8 rebounds per game on his way to second team all-conference and Freshman of the Year honors in the CCIW. With 316 points, he became just the third freshman to lead Augustana in scoring, joining Drew Carstens in 2000-01 and Louis "Soup" Semeny in 1924-25. He just missed becoming the first player ever to lead Augustana in scoring and rebounding as a freshman. His 183 rebounds were seven shy of team leader Brandon Kunz's (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) 190.  

Ryan was one of just two Vikings to start all 27 contests this season and made his presence felt immediately. His 13 points at Aurora on November 15 were the most by a Viking freshman in a season opener in 26 years.  

Ryan shot .516 from the field and .638 from the free throw line this season and had 35 assists, 26 steals and 10 blocked shots. He finished in the CCIW top ten in field goal percentage and rebounding. He posted six double-doubles and had high games of 21 points at Elmhurst, 13 rebounds against Wisconsin-Oshkosh, five assists versus St. Ambrose and five steals against Carthage.
