Business Day connects students to area employers

March  11, 2013

Businesses looking for connections with some of the area’s best and brightest college students are invited to register now for Business Day 2013 at Augustana College.

The annual event, which falls on Friday, April 19, this year, has grown into one of the area’s premier networking and job-shadowing opportunities. Last year, 140 Augustana students spent the day with 53 employers, from major international corporations to smaller Quad Cities-based companies.

Last year, an Augustana student who impressed his host was invited to attend investor Warren Buffett’s annual shareholders meeting in Omaha.

This year’s keynote speaker, Michael Passananti, is an Augustana graduate who now works as a lawyer with Duggan Bertsch, LLC, in Chicago. Passasnanti participated in Business Day as a student. Now he sees the event from a company’s perspective. “They’re taking a look at the next generation, and for those businesses that are looking for younger job candidates, it’s a great recruiting tool,” he said.

After meeting and sitting down together for a catered breakfast and Passananti’s remarks, business representatives and students head out for a day of job shadowing and information gathering at company offices.

“It provided me with a more realistic idea of the duties and responsibilities that go with a job,” said Ceara Campos, an Augustana senior from Rock Falls, who took a closer look at healthcare administration by job-shadowing at a medical clinic last year.

Some companies have been participating in Business Day for 30 years. “The community is your marketplace,” said Passananti. “From a business perspective, Business Day is a great way to have outreach in your community.”

Companies interested in participating should email or call Judy Campos, business program administrator, (309) 794-7470.
