Men's tennis splits with Grinnell & Nebraska Wesleyan

Sophomore Lawrence Palmer won a pair of matches at number one singles on Saturday, March 9 against Grinnell and Nebraska Wesleyan. He moved his singles' record to 10-7 on the season.

The Augustana men's tennis team split a pair of matches on Saturday, March 9 in Grinnell, Iowa. The Vikings fell to Grinnell, ranked 14th in the NCAA Division III Central Region, by a score of 7-2 before bouncing back to handle Nebraska Wesleyan 7-2 in the night cap. Second year head coach Jon Miedema's team is now 8-4 on the season heading into a match on Saturday, March 16 battle with Coe in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at 10:00 a.m.


Grinnell swept the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead before the singles started. Sophomore Lawrence Palmer (Schiller International School, El Prat de Llobregat, Spain) took a three set battle over Elliott Czarnecki at number one. Palmer dropped the first set 6-1 before coming back with 6-3; 6-3 wins in sets two and three to claim the victory.  

The other Augustana win came at number four singles where junior Andy Wall (Notre Dame Academy, De Pere, Wis.) defeated C.J. Ray 7-5; 2-6; 7-6.  


The Vikings jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles and never looked back en route to a 7-2 victory over Nebraska Wesleyan.  

Sophomore Lawrence Palmer (Schiller International School, El Prat de Llobregat, Spain) and junior Andy Wall (Notre Dame Academy, De Pere, Wis.) picked up an 8-3 win at number one doubles over Zach Hicks and Rene Torti. Senior Will Palmer (Schiller International School, Leicester, England) and junior Colin Arnold (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) beat Ryan McCarty and Seth Shimerda at number two doubles 8-4. This was the first action of the spring season for Arnold, who spent the second half of the winter term on an internship in Australia.  

The number three doubles team of freshman Harold Olsson (Lidingo, Sweden) and junior Kevin Bayles (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill.) claimed an 8-1 win over Trevor Milburn and Jordan Barrett at number three.  

Palmer beat Hicks at number one singles 6-2; 6-0 and Olson took care of Torti at number two 6-3; 6-2. Arnold jumped into the number three spot in the singles lineup and he responded with a 7-5; 6-2 win over Milburn.   Bayles beat Barrett 6-3; 6-0 at number four.  

Senior Jack Cullen (Edgewood HS, Madison, Wis.) dropped a three set match to McCarty at number five (7-5; 3-6; 6-10) and junior Grant Wick (Windsor HS, Fort Collins, Colo.) fell to Shimerda at number six (6-2; 3-6; 2-10).
