Wikipedia fans to unite for Edit-a-thon

March  07, 2013

Wikipedia fans are invited to learn how to edit the world’s largest encyclopedia during a first-ever “edit-a-thon” from 4-6 p.m. March 20 in the Thomas Tredway Library (3435 9½ Avenue). The event will be held in the Special Collections Classroom on the library’s first floor, and is free and open to the public.

“Our plan is to show how easy it is to edit a page and provide a list of pages that could use help,” said Shawn Beattie, manager of educational technology services at Augustana College.

The idea for an edit-a-thon comes from Wikipedia’s second annual campaign to forge closer ties with libraries across the country, given their shared interest in collecting information.

Wikipedia’s campaign caught the attention of Beattie and Sarah Horowitz, a special collections librarian at the Tredway Library. There is a natural connection between special collections and the need for greater depth within local articles on Wikipedia, particularly when Wikipedia can be edited by anyone with a web connection, Beattie explained.

Since Wikipedia was launched in 2001, the free online encyclopedia has grown into the largest archive of articles ever known and continues to expand every year. Because the content is user-generated, it is subject to constant editing and improvement.
