Strong pitching on last day of Florida trip

Junior Jaime Rehmert cracked three hits on the day, including two in a 1-0 loss to Alma as Augustana finished its spring break trip with a fine 8-2 record.

CLERMONT, Florida - Augustana put the finishing touches on its spring break trip in Clermont, Florida with a pair of outstanding pitching performances of Thursday, February 28. The Vikings split on the day, beating Ferrum 5-2 behind a five hit, nine strikeout performance from junior Sarah Hintz (LeRoy HS, LeRoy, Ill.) and falling to Alma 1-0 as freshman Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.)  gave up just one run on five hits with two strikeouts.

Veteran head coach Kris Kistler's squad comes home from Florida with an 8-2 overall record with the only losses coming at the hands of Capital by the score of 4-2 on February 25 and Alma today.

Junior Sarah Hintz (LeRoy HS, LeRoy, Ill.) scattered five hits and battled her way to a 5-2 victory over Ferrum on Thursday, February 28. She struck out nine and now has 38 strikeouts in 26 innings this season and only one of the two runs she allowed was earned. Hintz moves to 3-1 on the season.

Ferrum took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first when Karly Thompson tripled with one out and came home on a passed ball.

The Vikings didn't break through against Ferrum starter Emily Taylor until the fourth. Junior Jaime Rehmert (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) singled to lead off the frame and gave way to pinch-runner Miranda Hiemer (Nazareth Academy, Chicago, Ill.). Hiemer went to second on a sacrifice bunt by senior Jenna Nelson (Orion HS, Orion, Ill.) and sophomore Jaclyn Wrona (Glenbard South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) walked. Freshman Cheyenne Burnett (Rock Falls HS, Rock Falls, Ill.) reached on a bunt single to load the bases and junior Chaney Tambling (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.) singled to score Hiemer and tie the game 1-1.  Junior Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) grounded out to shortstop but Wrona scored on the play to give the Vikings the lead.

In the fifth Nelson's single with sophomore Christie Wiersema (Morrison HS, Morrison, Ill.) on second brought Wiersema in with the third run for Augustana. Watson's home run in the sixth with Tambling, who had doubled, on board made it 5-1.  Ferrum scored one run in the bottom of the seventh but Hintz was able to end the game with a double play as right fielder Wiersema cut down a runner at the plate for the final out of the contest.

Augustana had seven hits with Tambling collecting two and Watson had three RBI.

Freshman Ashley Anderson (Sherrard HS, Viola, Ill.) pitched a tremendous game but came up on the short end of a 1-0 decision to Alma. She struck out two and allowed five hits and gave up just one fifth inning run.

The Scots' Cori Witham led off with a double to start the fifth and gave way to pinch runner Rachel Bowke. Bowke went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Christina Snoblen and scored when Brooke Hein's ball was misplayed for an error. That proved to be the only scoring in the game.

Augustana did threaten in the bottom of the seventh when freshman Cheyenne Burnett (Rock Falls HS, Rock Falls, Ill.) single with one out. After a second out in the frame, junior Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) singled to right and Burnett scampered to third. Sophomore Laura Behnke (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Roselle, Ill.) walked to load the bases but sophomore Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) was retired on a fly ball to center to end the game.

The Vikings only managed five hits off Alma pitcher Louise Rezmer with junior Jaime Rehmert (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) collecting two of those.

Augustana's next action will be a March 16 double header in St. Louis, Missouri against Fontbonne.
