Vikings pound 29 hits in pair of victories

Senior Kurt Schmidt collected six hits in eight at-bats while scoring four runs and knocking in three as Augustana beat Gwynedd-Mercy 5-1 and Milwaukee School of Engineering 14-4 on Wednesday, February 27 in Aurburndale, Florida. The Vikings are now 6-0 on the season.

AUBURNDALE, Florida - Augustana cranked up the offense on Wednesday, February 27 and the result was a pair of victories in Auburndale, Florida. The Vikings pounded out a total of 29 hits en route to wins over Gwynedd-Mercy (5-1) and Milwaukee School of Engineering (14-4) as they moved to 6-0 on the year.


Senior Jared McIntosh (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) tossed seven innings of three hit baseball and freshman Brandon Bollman (Lincoln-Way East HS, Frankfort, Ill.) worked the final two in relief to help lead the way at Augustana defeated Gwynedd-Mercy 5-1 on Wednesday, February 27. McIntosh had all his pitches working as he struck out 11 and moved his record to 2-0 on the season. Bollman gave up just one hit to the seven batters he faced.  

The Vikings jumped on Gwynedd-Mercy starter Jamey Minnemeyer early, exploding for four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Junior Jacob Van Duyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.) led off with a single and stole second. After one out, senior Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) single Van Duyne to third. Senior Grant Stewart (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) ripped a single to score Van Duyne and push Schmidt to second. Sophomore Kyle Lenihan (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) followed with a double to plate Schmidt and move Stewart to third. An error on a ball hit by freshman Trace Gingerich (Sherrard HS, Sherrard, Ill.) allowed Stewart to score with the fourth run of the inning.  

McIntosh got hit with an unearned run in the top of the third to cut the lead to 4-1 but the Augustana offense got that back in the bottom of the frame. With one out Stewart doubled and Lenihan singled him to third. Gingerich grounded out but Stewart scored on the play to make it 5-1.  

There was no more scoring in the game as McIntosh and Bollman held the Gwynedd-Mercy bats at bay for the rest of the contest.  

Lenihan had three hits while Schmidt, Stewart and senior Mark VanNatta (Rock Island Alleman HS, Moline, Ill.) each had two hits. Stewart scored a pair of runs and Gingerich had two RBI.  


The Vikings pounded 17 hits as they beat MSOE 14-4 in a game shortened to seven innings because of the score. The top of the Augustana lineup did the most damage as junior Jacob Van Duyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.), senior Jeremy Juhl (Glenbard East HS, Lombard, Ill.) and senior Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.) combined for 10 hits in 13 at-bats with 11 runs scored and six RBI. Van Duyne was three for four with four runs scored and an RBI; Juhl had three hits in five at-bats with four runs scored and two RBI while Schmidt tossed in four hits in four at-bats with three runs scored and three RBI.  

Augustana jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning as Van Duyne singled, Juhl reached on an error and Schmidt singled to load the bases. Senior Grant Stewart followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to score VanDuyne and then Juhl and Schmidt moved up on a wild pitch. A ground ball off the bat of sophomore Kyle Lenihan (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.) scored Juhl with Schmidt moving to third. Schmidt then scored on a wild pitch.  

The Vikings couldn't hold the lead; however, as freshman Jimmy Nickell (Warren Township HS, Oak Creek, Ill.) faced six batters and failed to get an out. He was charged with all four Raider runs in the bottom of the first inning. Fellow freshman James Rammel (McHenry HS, McHenry, Ill.) came on in relief and ended up working six scoreless innings without allowing a run and giving up just two hits and one walk. He was credited with his first collegiate victory. Sophomore Eric Egan (Oswego East HS, Aurora, Ill.) worked a scoreless seventh.  

Trailing 4-3 after one inning, Augustana rebounded with four runs in the top of the second. Sophomore Danny Fifer (Lincoln-Way West HS, New Lenox, Ill.) singled with one out and advanced to second on the wild pitch. Van Duyne doubled him in to tie the game 4-4. Van Duyne went to third on a wild pitch and scored on Juhl's single to make it 5-4. Schmidt and Stewart followed with singled with Stewart's hit bringing Juhl home with the Vikings sixth run of the game. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Lenihan made it 7-4.   

Augustana was not finished as the Vikings put up four runs in the top of the fourth and three in the top of the seventh to account for the final score of 14-4.
