Vikings split with Davenport and Hanover

Freshman Harald Olsson posted the only Augustana victory in an 8-1 loss to Davenport when he won at number two singles and he alos won at both singles and doubles in a 9-0 victory over Hanover on Tuesday, February 26 in Orlando, Florida.

ORLANDO, Florida - Augustana split a pair of matches in men's tennis on Tuesday, February 26 in Orlando, Florida. The Vikings dropped an 8-1 decision to Davenport University, the 25th ranked team in NAIA, before bouncing back to defeat Hanover 9-0. Augustana is now 6-3 on the season with all the losses coming on the Florida spring break trip.


Augustana was only able to win once against the 25th ranked NAIA team in the nation in an 8-1 defeat. Freshman Harald Olsson (Lidingo, Sweden) picked up the lone victory for the Vikings when he defeated Zac Chambers at number two singles 7-6; 3-6; 10-5.  

Senior Will Palmer (Schiller International School, Leicester, England) went three sets at number three singles before falling to Tyler Chambers 0-6; 6-0; 7-10.   Davenport is now 8-3 overall while Augustana is 5-3.  


The Vikings shrugged off the loss to Davenport and routed Hanover 9-0 and only one individual match provided any drama. Junior Andy Wall (Notre Dame Academy, DePere, Wis.) beat Reid Clark 9-8 at number three singles in the closest competition of the meet. Earlier, he teamed with sophomore Lawrence Palmer (Schiller International School, El Prat de Llobregat, Spain) to defeat Brian Clark and Steven Gilliam at number one doubles by a score of 8-2. Palmer won at number one singles by a score of 6-2; 6-2 over Gilliam.  

Freshman Harald Olsson (Lidingo, Sweden) beat Kenny Duncan 6-0; 6-3 at number two singles and then combined with senior Will Palmer (Schiller International School, Leicester, England) to handle Devon Sharpe and Reid Clark 8-4 at number two doubles.  

Junior Grant Wick (Windsor HS, Fort Collins, Colo.) picked up a 6-0; 6-2 win over Sharpe at number four singles and senior Jack Cullen (Edgewood HS, Madison, Wis.) won 6-2; 6-1 over Andrew Nice at number five. Freshman Austin Schoeck (Rock Island Alleman HS, Rock Island, Ill.) beat Joshua Ruse 8-3 at number six single.  

Cullen and junior Kevin Bayles (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill.) beat Nice and Austin Veach 8-0 at number three doubles.
