Vikings split on rainy day in Florida

Senior Meghan Wethington won her singles match against Hanover and both doubles competitions against Davenport and Hanover on Tuesday, February 26 in Orlando, Florida.

ORLANDO, Florida - Rain played havoc with the schedule on Tuesday, February 26 in Orlando and the result was a split for the Augustana women's tennis team. The Vikings lost to Davenport 5-2 before bouncing back to beat Hanover 9-0 in the second match of the day. Augustana is currently 10-4 on the season and is scheduled to play Concordia-Moorhead on Friday, March 1 in Orlando.


This match was shortened due to rain with the numbers four and five singles matches wiped out due to heavy rains in the Orlando area. Junior Kim Sawyer (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) picked up a victory at number one singles by beating Emily Spiech 7-6; 6-2 to move her overall record to 17-2 on the season. The other victory for the Vikings came at number two doubles where seniors Krista Panko (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) and Meghan Wethington (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) came through with an 8-3 victory over Marcie Kooyers and Kristi Kuzdal 8-3.  

Freshman Aileen MacDonald (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) dropped a tough three-set decision to Marcie Kooyers at number three by scored of 1-6; 7-6; 2-6. Freshman Lauren Kaczmarek (Glenbard South HS, Lombard, Ill.) also went three-sets at number six singles before falling 6-4; 2-6; 5-7 to Savannah Smith.  

Sawyer and McDonald lost a close 9-8 decision at number one doubles to Alyssa Fuentes and Spiech.  


After the loss to Davenport, the Vikings roared back and flattened Hanover 9-0. Senior Kim Sawyer (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) moved to 18-2 on the season with a 6-1; 6-0 win over Kim Fong at number one. She teamed with freshman Aileen MacDonald (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) at number one doubles to beat Fong and Kathleen Brinegar 8-3. MacDonald also won her singles match at number three by a score of 8-0 over Kelsey Jones. That upped MacDonald's record to 13-6.  

Senior Krista Panko (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) beat Brinegar 8-4 at number two singles to move to 12-10. She combined with senior Meghan Wethington (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) at number two doubles to defeat Jones and Stephanie Kirk 8-6 and now sport a 13-4 record. Wethington beat Amanda Learned 8-2 at number five singles.  

Sophomore Miranda Pence (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) beat Kirk 8-1 at number four singles and then teamed with freshman Madeline Voss (Lincoln-Way East HS, Frankfort, Ill.) to win at number three doubles 8-2 over Learned and Sarah Love. Junior Callie Winter (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) beat Love 6-4; 6-4 at number six singles.
