Strong pitching lets Vikings sweep Brandeis

Senior Ben Heaton scattered seven hits over seven innings and combined with freshman Darwin Townsend to record a shut out in Augustana's 6-0 win over Brandeis on Saturday, February 23 in Auburndale, Florida.

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - The mound combination of senior Ben Heaton (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Heyworth, Ill.) and freshman Darwin Townsend (Libertyville HS, Libertyville, Ill.) proved to be the answer as Augustana shut out Brandeis 6-0 on Saturday, February 23 in Auburndale, Florida. Heaton worked seven innings, scattering seven hits while Townsend faced the minimum of six batters over his two innings.

Heaton struck out six and walked just one while Townsend struck out four of the six batters he faced. The victory gave the Vikings a sweep of the season-opening three-game series with the Judges.

Augustana put up single runs in the first, third and seventh innings before breaking things open with three runs in the top of the eighth.

Junior Jacob VanDuyne (Wilmington HS, Wilmington, Ill.), who would go four for four on the day with two runs scored, two RBI and a stolen base, kick-started things in the top of the first. He singled off Brandeis starter, and loser, Colin Markel and promptly stole second. He advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of senior shortstop Jeremy Juhl (Glenbard East HS, Lombard, Ill.) and scored on a single by senior second baseman Kurt Schmidt (Grayslake Central HS, Grayslake, Ill.).

In the third VanDuyne led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice by Juhl and came home on Schmidt's sacrifice fly to right field. The run in the seventh came with the help of some shoddy fielding by the Judges. Senior Jared McIntosh (Davenport Assumption HS, Davenport, Iowa) led off and reached on an error and went to second on a passed ball. He scored on VanDuyne's single to make it 3-0.

The three run eighth started with two outs as sophomore third baseman Kyle Lenihan (Romeoville HS, Romeoville, Ill.)  walked and went to second on a single by senior pinch-hitter David Balzer (Morris HS, Morris, Ill.). McIntosh then singled and drove in Lenihan and pushed Balzer to third. A passed ball allowed Balzer to score and McIntosh to go to second where VanDuyne's single drove him in.

VanDuyne's four hits paced the Vikings while Schmidt contributed three as the Vikings collected 10 hits off four Brandeis hurlers.

Augustana will be off on Sunday before playing Hanover at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 25 at Lake Myrtle #4 in Auburndale. The Vikings are 3-0 on the season while Brandeis is 1-4.
