Dwight Ekstam was finally laid to rest 68 years after his death in WWII. USMC 2nd Lt. Ekstam was in a bomber that crashed into a mountain in the New Hebrides on April 22, 1944. The difficult location hindered the search and retrieval; official identification was made in January 2011 with burial in Arlington National Cemetery in October 2012.


Albert Weidlich, who takes classes at Richland Community College in Decatur, Ill., was honored with the Richland Student Core Values Award for 2011-2012.


James Weigand was honored with the Indiana University School of Education’s distinguished alumni award. Jim has held various positions at the university since 1964; currently he is special assistant to the president of the Indiana University Foundation.


Glenn Bergmark, retired pastor, received one of U.S. Congressman Daniel Lipinski’s 2012 Senior Citizen of the Year awards for his devotion and dedication to the Village of Lemont (Ill.) and its residents.

Paul Nelson retired after 49 years of teaching political philosophy at Middlebury (Vt.) College.


Bette Olsen Johnson married David Moore on August 11, 2012.


Bill Culbertson was made an American Chemical Society (ACS) Fellow and honored for his scientific contributions, consisting of many patents, publications, books, teaching, and for his many contributions to the ACS.

Allan Griesemer was named Man of the Year in Redlands, Calif., during the Redlands Chamber of Commerce Annual Installation Dinner & Civic Awards Ceremony.


Thomas Benson presented the keynote address at the biennial conference of the Association of Christian Universities and Colleges in Asia, held in Tokyo, Japan, October 2012.


Curtis Roseman wrote the book Building the American Dream: A Swedish Immigrant Carpenter, Contractor, and Family in Moline, Illinois, published by Heritage Documentaries, Inc. The book is about a Swedish immigrant family and a carpenter/contractor who built 80 houses in the Quad-City area, including two that ultimately became part of the Augustana campus.


Norman Pastorek was a visiting professor at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn., in September 2012.


James Nelson retired from teaching in Norway and returned to the United States where he married Irene Walker on August 11, 2012.


Jeanne Donstad Olsen, a chaplain with Genesis Spiritual Care, received the 2012 Legend Award, which is the highest level of employee recognition given out by the health system in the five-level Never Settle Reward and Recognition Program. The Legend Award recognizes employees who consistently go far above and beyond what’s expected in their jobs.



George Drost was elected president of WORLDCHICAGO, an international hosting organization. He also was elected to the Presbyterian Home Board, Chicago.

Larry Kuster, partner at Rammelkamp Bradney, Jacksonville, Ill., was listed as one of the Top 100 Downstate Illinois Leading Lawyers. A profile article appeared in the July 2012 Leading Lawyers Magazine-Business Edition.


Bob Ericksen retired as director of the Dashew Center for International Students and Scholars at UCLA.

Bill Freeman is director of the Regional Education Academy for Leadership at the University of St. Francis, Joliet, Ill.


John Arthur Anderson was appointed supervisor of St. Charles (Ill.) Township. He has retired from Alpha Precision, Inc.

Mary Ziegler Schmitendorf was installed as the 111th president of the Illinois State Chapter of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, a philanthropic and educational organization.


William Simpkins, professor of geology at Iowa State University, Ames, was elected to a four-year term as councilor in the Geological Society of America.

Rod Taylor was promoted to associate director of engineering at Merck Consumer Care, a division of Merck, Inc.


Janis Machala was named dean of the continuing education program at Bellevue (Wash.) College.

David Quillen, executive vice president of finance and operations at Waubonsee Community College, was honored as a 2012 Chief Financial Officer of the Year by the Daily Herald Business Ledger. The award celebrates financial executives who contribute to the success of the Chicago region’s economic growth and stability.


Kim Stromberg Bates teaches at the Peoria (Ill.) Children’s Home.

Joseph Benning is principal at St. Peter’s Catholic School, Beaufort, S.C. Paul Dennhardt was awarded the 2012 College of Fine Arts Outstanding Research Award in recognition of his outstanding record of scholarly research and creative productivity. Judith Bergstrom Rehder retired after 32 years at the Illinois Department of Children & Family Services.


William Law is dean of the School of Engineering, Mathematics, and Science at Purdue University Calumet, Hammond, Ind.

Paul Obrock, DMD, received the Mastership Award from the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD). It is the highest honor available from the AGD and one of the most respected designations within the profession. He also was honored with fellowships in the Academy of Dentistry International, the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and the American College of Dentists. Martha Peterson is on a one-year leave-of-absence as professor at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine to work as a program director at the National Science Foundation, in the division of molecular and cellular biology.



Pamela Crouch is executive director of MidCoast Fine Arts and co-founder of Living Proof Exhibit, an art exhibit that celebrates the creative spirit of the breast cancer survivor and provides art therapy for cancer patients.

Debbie Harrington James received the master’s in education from Western Illinois University. She is a mental health counselor for the Iowa Department of Correctional Services. Scott Olson is new product planning and roadmap manager for NEC America Mobile Communications, Irving, Texas.

Carolyn Webber works as a principal consultant at the Illinois State Board of Education.


Melanie Johnson married Mark Bannister in June 2012. She is the director of corporate and foundation relations at the Fort Hays State University Foundation.

Jon Rasmussen is senior director of product management at Mobile Demand of Hiawatha, Iowa.

Jeff Wilson and his family traveled during his spring 2012 sabbatical to Burundi, Africa, where he served as visiting professor of music at Hope Africa University. He then returned to Greenville (Ill.) College, where he is music department chair.


Richard Jeffery opened Riverwalk Pizza in downtown Naperville, Ill.


Nan Stutzman Eller is director of instructional support services at SOAR@Oakland Charter School in Denver, Colo.

David Nord, village administrator of Cherry Valley, Ill., was elected president of the Illinois City/County Management Association.


Michael Stelzer has been appointed to serve as a circuit judge on the 22nd Judicial Circuit, St. Louis, Mo.


Kirk Bednar was promoted to city manager of Brentwood, Tenn.

Thorsten Johnson had a son, Phoenix Charles, on June 5, 2012 (Ann; Leo, 2).

Carlyne Adams Mabry received the M.B.A. in human resources management from Capella University.

Heather Krans Schlichter is director of human resources at Momentous Insurance Brokerage, Inc.


Christine Loula is the annual giving assistant in the Office of Advancement at Augustana College.
