Students, staff and friends of the college gathered for the grand re-opening of the Brew by the Slough coffeehouse Thursday, enjoying free samples and tours of the renovated fourth floor of the Tredway Library/Center for Student Life.
Here are some facts and thoughts from a Lunch and Learn there just before the event:
As part of the LEED Silver standard, the wood used in the CSL had to be sourced from within 500 miles of Augustana.
The CSL will have an "eco wall" with plantings, possibly edible herbs.
The CSL will be a place "where living is learning" because the building itself will not present physical barriers between various activities. (Dean Evelyn Campbell)
CSL is only one of many acronyms. There are also BIM and IPD. "Building Information Modeling" is a digital representation of the physical and functional characteristics of the building. "Integrated Project Delivery" seeks to align interests, objectives and practices through a team-based approach. Bottom line: less waste of materials and more efficient scheduling of workers
The roof has a fall-restraint system to protect workers.
Things are on schedule. The crew is scheduled to turn over the CSL to the college the first week of August. The kitchen will be handed over to Dining Services a month earlier.

The new dining hall will have extended hours: 7 a.m.-9 p.m., seven days a week.
The new kitchen will have open flame cooking, which means a stone pizza oven, among other things.
The new dining hall in the CSL will be just for dining. Students won't be displaced for events as they are now in the College Center.
