Viking men win at Sol Butler Invite

Senior Dennis O'Flaherty won the 1000 and anchored the winning 4x800 relay team Saturday at the Sol Butler Invitational in Dubuque, Iowa.

DUBUQUE, Iowa- Augustana senior Dennis O'Flaherty (Sandburg HS Orland Park, Ill.) was a double winner Saturday and three other Viking individuals picked up wins as well as coach Paul Olsen's team opened its 2013 indoor season by winning the Sol Butler Invitational at the University of Dubuque.

O'Flaherty took the 1000 in a time of 2:42.25 and anchored the winning 4x800 relay team, which finished in 8:13.24. Sophomore Nick Gornick (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.), junior Edgar Valle (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) and senior Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) ran the first three legs.  

The Vikings claimed all 31 points in the mile. Freshman Keith Sands (United Township HS, Silvis, Ill.) was the winner in a time of 4:33.24, with junior Tyler Busch (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) (4:34.61), senior Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) (4:35.56), freshman Brain Lovejoy (Mount Carmel HS, Chicago, Ill.) (4:52.34), sophomore Joe Puetz (Dunlap HS, Dunlap, Ill.) (4:52.48) and freshman Alex Gorsuch (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.) (4:54.41) claiming the next five spots, respectively. The Vikings actually had the top eight finishers in the race, with sophomore Bryan Long (Waukesha North HS, Waukesha, Wis.) and senior Paul Hurd (Wilton HS, Wilton, Iowa) taking seventh and eighth.  

Other winners for Augustana were senior Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.), with a :50.59 in the 400 and Colton Vankirk (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.), who cleared 14' 3¼ in the pole vault.  

Sophomore Jeffrey Padesky (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) was second in the pole vault and junior Will Lardner (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) fourth. Each cleared 13' 9¼". Sophomore Andrew Lulis (Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, Ill.) went 13' 3½" to take fifth. Senior Kevin Macek (Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) was second in the weight throw with a heave of 50' 2½", one spot ahead of sophomore teammate Jacob Benner (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.), who threw 48' 6¾". Macek also put the shot 44' 4¼" to finish fourth. Sophomore Justin Davidson's (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.) leap of 6' 2¾" was good for second in the high jump and junior Jay Graffagna (Geneva HS, La Fox, Ill.) ran a :23.28 to take second in the 200. Junior Szymon Ligas (St. Bede Academy, Spring Valley, Ill.) ran a 2:49.41 to finish second behind O'Flaherty in the 1000.  

A pair of Viking relay teams took second place as well. The 4x200 unit of Graffagna, senior Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.), sophomore Keith Cline (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) and senior Floyd Mays (Mooseheart HS, Justice, Ill.) finished in 1:31.29. The 4x400 team, consisting of senior Dan Doubet (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.), junior Steve Zahrobsky (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.), Rindone and Patton finished in 3:26.06.  

Led by freshman Deandre Law (Galesburg HS, Galesburg, Ill.), Augustana finished 3, 4, 5 behind Patton in the 400. Law ran :51.90, followed by classmate Benjamin Damisch (Burlington Central HS, Maple Park, Ill.) (:52.72) and Zahrobsky (:53.05). Law also finished sixth in the 200 with a time of :23.87.  

In the 55-meter hurdles, sophomore David Voland (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) ran an :08.19 to take third, while sophomore Kyle Bennett (Davenport West HS, Davenport, Iowa) was fifth in :8.32. In the 3000, it was Jonathan Smith taking third in 8:58.75, while junior Isaac Trostle (Willowbrook HS, Lombard, Ill.) and sophomore Grant Bell (Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa HS, Belgrade, Minn.) ran 9:07.58 and 9:09.92, respectively, to finish fifth and sixth. Junior Chris Madison (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) ran a 1:26.02 to take third in the 600 with sophomore Vincenzo Dal Pozzo (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) and junior Edgar Valle (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) finishing fourth and fifth with times of 1:26.22 and 1:27.29, respectively.  

Rounding out the point-scorers for the Vikings were Rindone and Cline in the 55. Rindone ran a fourth-place :06.55, while Cline's time of :06.66 was good for sixth.  

The host Spartans took second behind Augustana (187.5) in the team standings with 125 points. Monmouth (109.5) was third, followed by Loras (65) and Coe (23).  

Next up for Olsen's Vikings is the Midwest Invitational in Monmouth, Illinois on Saturday, January 19. Scheduled starting time for that meet is 11:00 a.m.
