November  09, 2012

Augustana College is pleased to welcome four individuals to the Augustana Board of Trustees. The new Board members are Brenda Barnes, Don Berg, Dr. Nils Hasselmo and Bob Karlblom, all graduates of Augustana. Each will serve a four-year term ending in 2016.

Brenda Barnes is a 1975 graduate of Augustana who previously has served on and chaired the Augustana Board of Trustees. As Board chair, Barnes helped lead the creation of the Authentically Augustana strategic plan that has guided the college’s path for the past decade. In 2010 Barnes stepped down from the leadership of Sara Lee Corp, which she served as president, COO and CEO after a career at Pepsi-Cola that included leadership as CEO of Pepsi-Cola North America. Named to Fortune magazine’s list of the world’s most powerful women in the 1990s, she received an honorary doctorate from Augustana in 1997.
Don Berg is a 1977 graduate of Augustana who is executive vice president and CFO of Brown-Forman, a diversified producer of consumer products whose well-known brands include Jack Daniel’s, Chambord, Korbel and Southern Comfort. After graduating from Augustana, Berg earned an M.B.A. from the Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. Early in his career, he worked as a CPA at Ernst and Whinney in Chicago.
Dr. Nils Hasselmo is a 1957 graduate of Augustana who also holds baccalaureate and graduate degrees from the University of Uppsala in Sweden and a Ph.D. in linguistics from Harvard. After teaching at Augustana, he joined the faculty at the University of Minnesota in 1965 and rose to vice president for administration and planning before becoming provost at the University of Arizona in 1983. Five years later, he returned to the University of Minnesota to serve as president until 1997. From 1998 to 2006, Dr. Hasselmo led the American Association of Universities. In addition to an honorary doctorate from Augustana, he was awarded the Order of the North Star by King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and was named Swedish-American of the Year in 1991.
Bob Karlblom is a 1965 graduate of Augustana who returns to the college's Board after a brief sabbatical. He led the Lehman Brothers Chicago office for 12 years and retired as its managing director in 2001. Among his many accomplishments, Karlblom played on the U.S. Olympic Exhibition Baseball team at the 1964 Tokyo Games, and he earned his M.B.A. at the University of Chicago. An active volunteer, Karlbom has served the McCormick Theological Seminary, Metropolitan (Chicago) Family Services, Lake Forest High School Board of Education and Lake Forest Hospital.
