A Salute to World War II Vets

November  02, 2012

The Augustana Veterans Support Group will host an event to honor veterans of World War II on Thursday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. in Larson Hall within Bergendoff Hall of Fine Arts (3701 7th Ave.). The event is free and open to the public.

The World War II veterans in attendance will be announced and all veterans will be recognized. Following the keynote address, there will be a reception with light refreshments, allowing students to interact with the veterans.

The keynote speaker is Lt. Herb Wood, a World War II veteran who flew Hellcat fighters off the U.S.S. Yorktown. Wood will be sharing his memories with the audience.

The Augustana Veterans Support Group is planning this event. The group was founded by three Augustana student veterans, Joshua Brown, J.D. Englehardt and Jeff Siirila, and now includes Augustana faculty and staff veterans.

Originally founded to bring Augustana’s veteran community together, now in its second year the group is looking to expand membership to veterans enrolled or serving at other Quad-Cities area colleges or universities.

Scott Cason, a Navy veteran and the college’s assistant vice president of communication and marketing, said, “The Augustana Veterans Support Group hopes that those who attend will remember our nation’s veterans and what they have gone through.” Cason added, “We are committed to helping people gain a better understanding of what it means to be a veteran.”
