Vikings win at Halloween Invitational

Junior Daniel Hinck won the 200 freestyle and anchored a pair of winning relays Saturday as Augustana claimed the team title at Illinois Wesleyan’s Halloween Invitational.

BLOOMINGTON, Ill.- Junior Daniel Hinck (Harlem HS, Loves Park, Ill.) won the 200 freestyle and anchored a pair of winning relays Saturday as Augustana claimed the team title at Illinois Wesleyan's Halloween Invitational. The Vikings finished with 95 points, followed by the hosts with 65 and Millikin with 26.  

Hinck swam a 1:52.85 in the 200 freestyle, followed by freshman David Sommers (Westlake HS, Thousand Oaks, Calif.) and junior Austin Zarbuck (Urbana HS, Urbana, Ill.), who finished second and third, respectively, in 1:54.57 and 1:57.37. Hinck also anchored the winning Viking 200 freestyle (1:31.75) and 200 medley (1:43.83) relays. Sophomore Aaron Holt (Mt. Vernon HS, Mt. Vernon, Ill.), Sommers and freshman Felipe Hernandez (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) joined Hinck on both relays.

Hernandez had a big day. He totaled four relay wins, leading off Augustana's winning 3x100 backstroke (2:55.67) and 3x100 breaststroke (3:19.20) relays, and added an individual win in the 200 backstroke (2:04.30). He was joined by freshmen Kyle Johnson (Shadow Mountain HS, Phoenix, Ariz.) and Austin Small (Morris HS, Morris, Ill.) on the 3x100 backstroke team and by junior Jason Hengst (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) and freshman Adam Bernardi (Boylan Catholic HS, Belvidere, Ill.) in the 3x100 breaststroke relay. Holt and Johnson finished second and third behind Hernandez in the 200 backstroke, swimming 2:06.00 and 2:18.04, respectively.

Sommers picked up a win in the 200 butterfly, finishing in 2:01.95, and anchored the winning 3x100 butterfly relay (2:47.53), which also included Holt and Bernardi.

Sophomores Michael Duy (Marmion Academy, Aurora, Ill.) and Joshua Wielenga (School of Environmental Studies, Apple Valley, Minn.) were winners in individual events as well. Duy won the 500 freestyle in 5:11.65 with Zarbuck taking second in 5:23.63. Wielenga won the one-meter diving competition with 191.25 points.

Holt, Hengst and Bernardi teamed up to win the 3x100 medley relay in 2:56.74.


Duy (:50.69) and Hinck (:50.76) finished second and third in the 100 freestyle and junior Ryan Chaney (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) and Hengst were second and third in the 200 breaststroke, swimming 2:35.91 and 2:41.16, respectively.


The Vikings will visit Monmouth for a dual meet on November 16 at 6:00 p.m.
