2012 Season - Two school records fall in Meet of Champions win

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Two school records fell and Augustana won eight events during an impressive performance in winning the team title at the Meet of Champions on Saturday, April 21 at Paul V. Olsen Track. The Vikings, ranked fifth in NCAA Division III, scored 240 points to outdistance a nine-team field that included two other teams ranked in the top 10 nationally.

Wisconsin-Whitewater, rated 10th, was a distant second with 146 points while Wisconsin-Platteville, ninth in the rankings, took third with 140.5. Monmouth was fourth (126.50), Carthage fifth 9116) and Wisconsin-Stevens Point was sixth (99). Loras (38), St. Ambrose (37) and Luther (35) rounded out the field.

Augustana's 1600 meter relay team of senior Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.), freshman David Voland (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.), junior Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and junior Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.) put an exclamation mark on the meet by racing to a new school record with a winning time of 3:12.71. That took down the previous mark of 3:13.13 set in 1996 by Nate Hurt, Scott Tumilty, Mark Zemke and Rob Lee.

The other school mark came in the hammer throw when senior Adam Myers (Dixon HS, Dixon, Ill.) uncorked a throw of 194' 0" which shattered Tom McIntire's 2005 record of 185' 7". Myers placed second in the event.

Senior Matt Bowman (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) got things started with a tremendous performance in the 10,000, which was run on Friday, April 20 at 9:30 p.m. Bowman blasted the last 400 in 60 seconds to win with a time of 30:31.22, the fifth fastest time in Augustana history. In the 10,000, junior Brian Pollastrini (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.) was fourth in 30:58.55 and junior Jonathan Smith (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) took fifth in 30:59.44. Pollastrini and Smith now have the ninth and 10th best times in school history.

Things did not slow down for the Vikings on Saturday as Voland ripped off a :51.96 win in the 400 hurdles, coming close to Ted McMillan's 2008 school record of :51.21. Voland also placed seventh in the 11 high hurdles in :15.56. Sophomore Tyler Busch (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) won the 3000 steeplechase in 9:28.51 and Rindone took the 200 in :21.79. Patton won the 400 in :48.43.

Senior Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) took first in the discus with a toss of 163' 10" and was eighth in the shot put at 46' 9 ½" and eighth in the hammer at 166' 3". The 3200 relay team of freshman Nick Gornick (York HS, Elmhurst, Ill.), freshman Keegan Buttimer (Riverside-Brookfield HS, Riverside, Ill.), senior Brad Keating (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) and Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) won with a time of 8:13.60. Smith moved into 10th place on the all-time list in the 1500 with a second place time of 3:51.83 while Keating was seventh in the same event in 3:57.52.

The 400 meter relay team of freshman David Devore (Midland HS, Midland, Mich.), Patton, freshman Keith Cline (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) and Rindone sped to a second place clocking of :41.82. Cline took third in the 100 in :11.05 with Devore grabbing seventh in :11.13. Freshman Vincent Dal Pazzo (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) was second in the 800 in 1:53.41.

Junior Luke Anderson (Lemont HS, Lemont, Ill.) was third in the javelin with a toss of 175' 7" and freshman Torre Harrell (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) placed third in the long jump with a mark of 23' 2 ¾". Davis was fourth in the 400 intermediates in :54.30 and fifth in the 110 high hurdles in :15.23. Junior Ethan Gale (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.) finished fourth in the decathlon with a point total of 5,743.

Freshman Andrew Brimeyer (Dubuque Senior HS, Dubuque, Iowa) placed fifth in the 5000 with a time of 16:04.92. Senior Thomas Christian (Port Angeles HS, Port Angeles, Wash.) was fifth in the 3000 steeplechase in 9:39.93. sophomore Edgar Valle (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) finished fifth in the 800 in 1:54.62 and junior Joe Zahn (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) was sixth in 1:55.26. Freshman Josh Prosser (Eureka HS, Goodfield, Ill.) cleared 6' 4 ¾" to take fifth in the high jump.

Junior Ryan Brummet (Riverdale HS, Port Byron, Ill.) took sixth in the 400 in :49.84 and freshman Kyle Bennett (Davenport West HS, Davenport, Iowa) was sixth in the 400 hurdles in :55.52. Junior Mike Tovar (Mooseheart HS, Chicago, Ill.) was sixth in the long jump with a leap of 21' 0" and junior Jacob O'Rourke (Davenport Assumption HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) finished seventh with a mark of 20' 11 ¾". Senior A.J. Nice (Rockford Christian Life HS, Caledonia, Ill.) was seventh in the pole vault at 13' 5 ¼" and senior Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) tossed the hammer 169' 3" to take seventh. Sophomore Josh Eisenberg (Richmond-Burton HS, Spring Grove, Ill.) was seventh in the decathlon with 5,493 points.
