2011-12 Season - Reece joins 100 victory club

Brittany Reece picked up her 100th career victory on Sunday, April 15 as Augustana defeated Monmouth 9-0 in action at the Quad City Tennis Club. Her 100th win came at number two doubles with partner Krista Panko when the duo beat Monmouth's Amanda Buck and Kristen Huffman 8-1.

MOLINE, Ill. - The big news coming out of Augustana's spilt with Wartburg and Monmouth in women's tennis on Sunday, April 15 was the fact that senior Brittany Reece (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) entered the exclusive 100 career victory circle. Reece entered Sunday's competition at the Quad City Tennis Club in Moline, Illinois with 99 victories (44 in singles and 55 in doubles). She won both her singles and doubles matches against Monmouth to push her over the century mark and into an 18th place tie with Tricia Sapio, who finished her career in 2011 with 101 victories.

After losing in both singles and doubles against Wartburg in a 6-3 loss during the morning, Reece picked up two wins in the afternoon as the Vikings beat Monmouth 9-0. She combined with junior Krista Panko (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) at number two doubles to beat Amanda Buck and Kristen Huffman by a score of 8-1. That was win number 100 for her and she also won her singles match at number two by a score of 6-0; 6-1 over Joi Henry.

With the split, Augustana moved to 12-10 overall on the season. The Vikings are scheduled to play Dubuque at home on Tuesday, April 17 at 3:00 p.m.


There were three tie-breakers in the singles portion of this match and the Vikings lost two of them during a 6-3 loss to Wartburg. Freshman Miranda Pence (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) picked up a tight victory over Brita Jensen at number six by scores of 6-4; 6-7; 12-10 but Augustana dropped matches at number three and number four where the tie-breaker was a factor.

Panko fell to Lindsay Greiner at number three 7-6; 4-6; 10-4 and junior Meghan Wethington (Geneseo HS, Geneseo, Ill.) dropped a 3-6; 6-4; 10-2 decision to Leanna Jenkins at number four.

Besides Pence's win at number six, sophomore Kim Sawyer (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) beat Claire Evans 6-3; 6-2 at number one.

The other Augustana victory came at number one doubles where Sawyer and Wethington defeated Jenny Dallenbach and Greiner 8-2.

The Vikings swept Monmouth 9-0 in the nightcap of the Sunday double header with Reece's doubles victory with Panko being the big news. It was the win over Buck and Huffman at number two by a score of 8-1 that gave Reece her 100th career victory. She made it 101 later in the match with an impressive 6-0; 6-1 win over Henry at number two singles.

Augustana jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the doubles competition. In addition to Reece and Panko winning at number two, Sawyer and Wethington made short work of Ashley Reynoso and Henry at number one by a score of 8-0. Sophomore Emily Kaczmarek (Glenbard South HS, Lombard, Ill.) and sophomore Caitee Margenthaler (Moline HS, Moline, Ill.) beat Kortney Rupp and Mackenzie Mahler 8-0 at number three.

Sawyer beat Reynoso 6-0; 6-0 at number one singles to move to 24-6 on the season. Panko beat Huffman 6-4; 6-0 at number three while sophomore Katie Scharnagle (Wheaton St. Francis HS, Lisle, Ill.) defeated Buck 6-0; 6-1 at number four to up her mark to 10-6.

Pence picked up her second singles victory of the day when she defeated Rupp 6-0; 6-0 at number five and sophomore Callie Winter (Downers Grove South HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) beat Mahler 6-0; 6-1 at number six.
