2011-12 Season - Men's tennis stays hot and moves to 14-6

Freshman Lawrence Palmer won two doubles matches and scored an impressive win at number two singles against North Central as Augustana won a pair of matches to go to 14-6 on the season.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - The Augustana men's tennis team continued its hot streak with a pair of decisive victories on Saturday, April 14 at the Lower Campus Courts. The Vikings beat North Central 9-0 in a College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin battle in the morning and then beat Cornell 8-1 in a non-conference match in the afternoon. First year head coach Jon Miedema's team is now 14-6 overall and 2-0 in the CCIW. Augustana now has victories in seven of its last eight matches.


Once again the doubles teams set the tone as all three picked up victories. The number one team of senior Adam DeSimone (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) and sophomore Andy Wall (Notre Dame Academy, DePere, Wis.) beat Will Exner and Boris Kampel 8-0. Freshman Lawrence (Schiller International School, El Prat de Llobregat, Spain) and junior Will (Schiller International School, Leicester, England) beat Rustam Saini and Eric McKee 8-3 at number two. The number three team of sophomore Colin Arnold (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) and junior Jack Cullen (Edgewood HS, Madison, Wis.) had quite a struggle before deposing Andrew McKinley and Mason Sass at number three by a score of 9-8.

DeSimone beat  McKee 6-3; 6-2 at number one singles while Lawrence Palmer destroyed Exner 6-1; 6-0 at number two. Wall defeated Kampel 6-4; 6-2 at number three and Cullen went three sets with Adam Ciccone at number four before winning 2-6; 6-4; 10-6. Arnold was the last Viking on the court at number five as he beat Saini 4-6; 6-3; 13-11. Sophomore Kevin Bayles (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill.) defeated Sass 6-3; 6-0 at number six.

The Vikings used their momentum from the win over North Central and didn't slack off much win in an 8-1 win over Cornell in the afternoon.

Although the doubles matches were a little tighter than they were in the victory over the Cardinals, Augustan was still impressive in sweeping all three against the Rams. DeSimone and Wall beat Ashan DeSilva and Orion Wilkinson 8-6 at number one. The brothers Palmer beat Garrett Russikoff and Joseph Reyes 8-4 at number two. Cullen and Arnold beat Justin Bradfield and Tyler Shonkwiler 8-5 at number three.

DeSimone lost a tough one at number one singles, falling to DeSilva 6-4; 4-6; 5-10. Wall beat Russikoff 7-6; 6-3 at number three and Arnold defeated Josef Gelfand 6-0; 6-3 at number four. Bayles took care of Shonkwiler 6-1; 6-1 at number five and Grant Wick (Windsor HS, Ft. Collins, Colo.) beat Joseph Reyes 6-1; 6-0 at number six.
