MOLINE, Ill. - Augustana won its first two games in the Augustana Invitational on Saturday, March 31 at Green Valley Sports Complex in Moline, Illinois. The Vikings beat Wisconsin-River Falls 2-1 in the first game and then pounded out 10 hits to turn back St. Norbert 9-1 in the second contest.

Sophomore Sarah Hintz (LeRoy HS, LeRoy, Ill.) scattered seven hits and went the distance as Augustana opened up play in the Augustana Invitational with a 2-1 victory over Wisconsin-River Falls on Saturday, March 31. The tournament is being held at Green Valley Sports Complex in Moline, Illinois.

Hintz improved her personal record to 9-1 as she struck out four and didn't allow a walk. The lone Falcon run came when she gave up a one-out home run to Hayley Buchanan in the sixth. Hintz got out of the sixth without any further damage and in the seventh she allowed singled to the first two batters but retired the next three to secure the victory.

The game was scoreless heading into the bottom of the fourth when sophomore first baseman Courtney Ledezma (United Township HS, East Moline, Ill.) singled with one out. She went to second on a ground out and scored the first run of the game on a single by sophomore Chaney Tambling (Dwight HS, Dwight, Ill.).

In the fifth the Vikings got some help from a shaky Falcon defense. Senior centerfielder Jillian Gibbs (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) reached on an error with one out. She was sacrificed to second by freshman second baseman Jenna Teson (Jacobs HS, Algonquin, Ill.) and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Augustana only had four hits in the game and Ledezma had two of them. The Vikings went to 12-5 on the year while River Falls fell to 9-6.

The Augustana bats came alive in the second game of the Augustana Invitational and the result was a 9-1 win over St. Norbert. Ledezma went the distance on the mound, giving up seven hits and striking out eight and sophomore designated hitter Jamie Rehmert (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) ripped a grand slam in a five run seventh that cemented the victory.

Ledezma was in control most of the way as she moved her record to 3-2 on the season. She gave up one run in the ninth but recorded her eighth strikeout for the final out.

The Vikings were the visitors in this game and they jumped on Green Knight starter Shannen Schmidt for three runs in the top of the first. Teson led off with an infield single and stole second. Senior right fielder Dawn Kernich (Mt. Olive HS, Mt. Olive, Ill.) walked and then Teson and Kernich executed a double steal with Teson taking third and Kernich second. Sophomore shortstop Krista Watson (Coal City HS, Coal City, Ill.) scorched a double to left field to score Teson and Kernich and she moved to third on the throw home. Ledezma helped her own cause by grounding out to shortstop to drive in Watson to make it 3-0.

In the fifth Rehmert singled with one out and gave way to pinch runner Abbi Staples (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.). Staples went to second on a wild pitch, stole third and came home on a sacrifice fly to right off the bat of Teson.

Augustana had one run on the board in the seventh when Rehmert came up with the bases loaded and she homered to left-center to make it 9-0.

The Vikings are now 13-5 on the year and St. Norbert is 4-8.
