2011-12 Season - Three wins lift Vikings to 10-5

Sophomore Kevin Bayles won three matches at singles over the past weekend and his win against Wisconsin-LaCrosse clinched a 5-4 victory for the Vikings on Saturday, March 25.

The Augustana men's tennis team won three matches over the weekend to push its overall record to 10-5. The Vikings defeated Edgewood 9-0 and Wisconsin-LaCrosse 5-4 on Saturday, March 24 in Madison, Wisconsin and then came home to knock off St. Ambrose 9-0 on Sunday, March 25.

First year head coach Jon Miedema's crew will be on the road this weekend with matches against Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Macalester on March 30 and March 31 respectively in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.

Four Vikings won all three singles matches over the weekend. Freshman Lawrence Palmer (Schiller International School, El Prat de Llobregat) took all three at number two singles while sophomore Andy Wall (Notre Dame Academy, DePere, Wis.) won three straight at number three. Sophomore Colin Arnold (Sterling HS, Sterling, Ill.) won twice at number five and once at number four. Sophomore Kevin Bayles (Homewood-Flossmoor HS, Flossmoor, Ill.) triumphed twice at number six and once at number five.

Arnold won three straight doubles matches as well at number three. He teamed with junior Jack Cullen (Edgewood HS, Madison, Wis.) twice and Bayles once.

Arnold and Bayles lead the team in singles victories as each have recorded 13. Bayles is 13-3 and Arnold is 13-5. Wall has pushed his record to 12-7 while senior Adam DeSimone (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) is currently 11-9. Lawrence Palmer is 7-7 but has won his last four singles matches at number two.

Vikings are perfect in win over Edgewood

MADISON, Wis. - The Vikings had little trouble in dispatching Edgewood in the morning match on Saturday, March 25 by a score of 9-0. In doubles competition, Augustana got the match started on a positive note by winning all three. DeSimone and Wall beat Cody Strebig and Max Divelbiss 8-4 at number one. The brothers Palmer, Lawrence and junior Will (Schiller International School, Great Britain) beat Tim Morgan and Michael Wanta 8-5 at number two. Cullen and Arnold won at number three by a score of 8-1 over Eric Gavinski and Edwin Mendoza.

DeSimone beat Strebig 6-3; 6-2 at number one singles. Lawrence Palmer handled Divelbiss 6-0; 6-2 at number two and Wall beat Morgan 6-1; 6-2 at number three. Cullen picked up a 6-0; 6-1 win over Wanta at number five and Bayles dispatched Gavinski 6-1; 6-2 at number six.

Kevin Bayles win at number six singles clinches first ever win over UW-LaCrosse

MADISON, Wis. - Bayles won a hard-fought 6-3; 6-7; 6-2 match at number six singles to clinch Augustana's 5-4 win over Wisconsin-LaCrosse on Saturday, March 25 in Madison, Wisconsin. It was the Vikings first ever win over UW-LaCrosse in five previous matches in this series. Just a year ago, Augustana fell to the Eagles 7-2.

The Vikings trailed 2-1 after the doubles sessions with the lone victory coming at number three where Cullen and Arnold prevailed 8-4 over Nick Skanavis and CJ Schwind.

In singles play, Augustana won four of six to cement the match. Lawrence Palmer beat Peter Stadum 6-3; 6-3 at number two. Wall beat Vic Mirasola 7-6; 6-2 at number three and Arnold handled Dante Pitera 6-2; 6-3 at number five. That set up Bayles' clincher over Murphy.

Vikings roll over St. Ambrose 9-0 for 13th straight victory in series with the Bees

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Augustana maintained its recent mastery of St. Ambrose, defeating the Bees 9-0 on Sunday, March 25 at the Lower Campus Courts. The win was the 13th straight in this series and the 23rd in the last 24 meetings between the two Quad City schools.

DeSimone and Wall beat Santiago Gonzalez and Luke Wood at number one doubles 8-5. Lawrence and Will Palmer handled Mike Harts and Nick Goodnight 8-3 at number two and Arnold and Bayles beat Dave Smith and John Rohlf at number three 8-3.

DeSimone bounced back from a 1-6 loss in the first set at number one singles to win 6-1 and 10-4 over Gonzalez. Lawrence Palmer took care of Harts at number two 6-0; 6-3. Wall defeated Wood 7-5; 6-3 at number three and Arnold beat Goodknight 6-3; 6-0 at number four. Bayles won 6-3; 6-4 over Smith at number five and sophomore Grant Wick (Windsor HS, Ft. Collins, Colo.) beat Rohlf 6-4; 3-6; 10-4 at number six.
