Junior Sarahbeth Jones won the 3000 at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Championships and anchored the distance medley relay team to victory in the same meet.

Sarahbeth Jones wins CCIW 3,000 & anchors winning distance medley relay; Vikings sixth at conference meet; Schnitzler betters her own Pentathlon school record twice

Junior Sarahbeth Jones (Warren Township HS, Wadsworth, Ill.) ran a 10:21.38 to win the 3,000 meters, highlighting Augustana's sixth-place finish at this year's CCIW meet in Naperville, Illinois. Jones also anchored the winning Viking distance medley relay team which finished in a school-record 12:13.73. Sophomores Kate Benge (Pleasant Valley HS, Bettendorf, Iowa), Kierra Smith (Creston HS, Creston, Iowa) and freshman Jessica Bacon (Rock Island HS, Rock Island, Ill.) ran the first three legs. Another highlight of the 2012 indoor season was the performance of sophomore pentathlete Johanna Schnitzler (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.), who twice broke the school record she set as a freshman. Her sixth-place total of 2,855 points at the conference meet stands as the new standard.

Jones, in the mile, sophomore Taelar Hillyer (Alleman HS, Bettendorf, Iowa), in the pole vault and the Viking distance medley relay team were all entered in the NCAA Division III national meet, but were not chosen for competition. Jones' best this year was 5:01.91, just 1.57 seconds off the school record. Hillyer, who won the pole vault in five of the seven meets in which the Vikings competed this year, cleared a best of 11' 7¾".

Smith and senior Morgan Gale (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.) were Augustana's top performers in sprints and hurdles this year. Gale had Viking season bests in the 55 (:07.79), 60 (:08.41) and 200 (:27.27), while Smith had team bests in the 55 (:08.90) and 60 (:09.53) hurdles as well as the 300 (:43.64) and 400 (1:01.30). Benge posted team bests at 500 (1:21.49), 600 (1:40.20) and 800 (2:19.35) meters. Sophomore Liana Beauchamp (Genoa-Kingston HS, Kingston, Ill.) was Augustana's top thrower, with bests of 39' 8¾" in the shot put and 49' 10" in the weight throw.

Coach Fred Whiteside's squad opened the season by finishing second among nine teams at the University of Dubuque's Sol Butler Invitational on January 14. Jones was an individual winner in the mile.

The Vikings picked up four individual and one relay win each at the Midwest Invitational in Monmouth, Illinois on January 21 and the Wartburg Lutheran Triangular on January 28. Schnitzler scored 2,734 points at Wartburg to break her own pentathlon record for the first time. Augustana finished second at the WLT, while no teams scores were kept at Monmouth.

Whiteside's crew opened February by finishing third among 19 teams at Illinois College's Jim Green Invitational and then picked up wins in eight events at the Augustana Invitational, at which no team scores were kept. The Vikings warmed up for the CCIW meet by hosting the Augustana Triangular on February 16. They finished second behind wins in seven events.
