The Lincoln Academy of Illinois recently honored outstanding senior college students during the annual Student Laureate Convocation, at the Old State Capitol State Historic Site in Springfield. The ceremony recognized a top student from each college and university in Illinois, with Rebecca Ann Kamp, a native of Rockford, Ill., representing Augustana College. Kamp also was the featured student-speaker at the event, speaking on behalf of all the Laureates.

Kamp is a senior majoring in elementary education and Spanish. Her honors include the Augustana Presidential Scholarship, Dean’s List and Trustee Award. In 2010, she earned a scholarship to study in Ecuador. She has been a leader in an after-school program for Rock Island elementary school children, and she has volunteered with St. Anthony’s Continuing Care Center, Augie Acres (sustainable agriculture program), Quad City Ballet and Longfellow Elementary School. On campus, Kamp is a tutor in the Augustana Reading/Writing Center.

The Lincoln Academy’s Student Laureate Awards are presented for excellence in curricular and extracurricular activities. At the Student Laureate Convocation, each student received a laureate medallion, along with an honorarium check and certificate of achievement. This year’s event marked the 37th year that students have been honored by the Academy.

“These students have exhibited a personal commitment to excel as seen by their remarkable academic accomplishments,” said Thomas S. Johnson, Chancellor of the Lincoln Academy. “They serve as role models to other Illinois students. With hard-working and dedicated young leaders such as these, Illinois and the rest of the nation can look forward to a bright future.”

Along with Kamp, other speakers at the event included Susan Koch, chancellor of the University of Illinois at Springfield, who delivered the invocation, and the Rev. Stanley L. Davis Jr., who delivered the benediction.
