CHICAGO, Illinois - A pair of early goals proved too much to overcome as 14th-ranked North Park defeated Augustana 3-1 in men's soccer action on Friday, October 14 in Chicago, Illinois. Head coach Brenton Joseph's Vikings fell behind 2-0 just 20 minutes into the contest and couldn't catch up in this battle under the lights.
North Park, which was 14th in the latest NCAA Division III national poll and second in the Central Region's rankings, used goals from Jonas Pettersson at 13:57 and 20:22 to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Both goals were assisted by Kris Grahn.
Augustana, which was seventh in the Central Region poll this week, cut the margin in half with a goal by senior Sean Fidlow (Carmel Catholic HS, Gurnee, Ill.) at 30:47. Junior John McSpadden (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) had the assist as Fidlow scored for a team leading ninth time this season.
Early in the second half (53:43), North Park got a goal from Fredrik Greiff off an assist by Robbin Hals to make it 3-1.
North Park held a narrow 14-12 advantage in shots attempted but had an 8-2 edge in corner kicks. Fidlow and freshman Nathan Kyes (Oswego HS, Oswego, Ill.) each had three shots for the Vikings.
Augustana dropped to 10-4 overall and 1-2 in the CCIW while North Park stayed unbeaten on the year at 9-0-3 and 3-0-1. Augustana will be back in action on Sunday, October 16 with a 1:00 p.m. non-conference match against Quad City neighbor St. Ambrose. That match was originally scheduled to be a home contest for the Fighting Bees but has been moved to Thorson-Lucken Field.
