Healthcare expert will share insights on reform

September  22, 2011

Genesis Health System President and CEO Doug Cropper believes healthcare reform is critical to America's economic survival. He will share his insights with Augustana College students and faculty, as well as the Quad-City community at 7 p.m. Oct. 4 in the Wilson Center, 3750 7th Ave.

"Doug Cropper is one of the true visionaries within the U.S. healthcare system, and we are fortunate to have his leadership here in the Quad Cities," said Steven C. Bahls, president of the college "I'm grateful that through the Ellwood F. Curtis Family Lectureship in Public Affairs, Augustana is able to provide a platform for this important conversation."

With the future workforce and soon-to-be taxpayers listening, Cropper will explain to the college audience how access, quality and cost are the drivers for healthcare reform. He will give a brief summary of healthcare reform, share Genesis' experience with an employee healthcare experiment and offer why he thinks clinical integration and accountable care organizations are integral to the future of healthcare.

"We need more balance and a greater commitment to more cost-efficient primary care, prevention and chronic disease management," Cropper said. "In the long term, this will keep Americans healthier, happier and reduce the demand for more expensive specialty care."

Cropper joined Genesis in 2008. In 2010, he spoke at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services summit in Washington, D.C., and earned the "Grassroots Champion Award" from the American Hospital Association.

This event is made possible by The Ellwood F. Curtis Family Lectureship in Public Affairs. Curtis served as president and vice chairman of John Deere. During his 42-year career with the Moline-based manufacturer, Curtis was active in the community. After his death, a permanent endowment fund was established to support annual lectures at Augustana. This program marks the 12th such presentation.
