2011 Season - Shutout over Grinnell opens season

Sophomore Adam Wilson scored the only goal Augustana would need in the Vikings' season opener on Saturday, September 3 at Grinnell. He tallied at 35:48 in the first half as Augustana defeated the Pioneers 2-0.

GRINNELL, Iowa - Coach Brenton Joseph’s men’s soccer team got its season off on the right foot, hitting the road Saturday, September 3 and coming away a 2-0 victor over Grinnell. The Vikings are off to a 1-0 start in 2011, while the Pioneers drop to 1-1.

Sophomore midfielder Adam Wilson (Plainfield North HS, Plainfield, Ill.) became the first Viking this season to dent the scoreboard when he found the net in the 36th minute on an assist from freshman Chandler Brooks (University HS, Bloomington, Ill.). Sean Fidlow (Carmel Catholic HS, Gurnee, Ill.), a second team All-CCIW selection a year ago, made it 2-0 on an unassisted goal in the 64th minute.

Meanwhile, the Viking defense, led by Cory DeGrave (Fremd HS, Palatine, Ill.), Jason Beckus (Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Michael Buric (Notre Dame Prep, Scottsdale, Ariz.) was not allowing the Pioneers much in the way of scoring opportunities. Grinnell managed just three shots in the game, only one of which was on goal. Augustana goalkeeper Tyler Cowherd (Bettendorf HS, Bettendorf, Iowa) made the save on that shot and went the full 90 minutes for the shutout.

Augustana held a 15-3 edge in shots for the game. Nine of the Vikings’ shots were on goal. They also had an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

Joseph’s squad is next in action on Sunday, September 4, when it will host another Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opponent—Cornell—at 3:30 p.m. The Rams will be the opponent in the first men’s game ever at Thorson-Lucken Field.
