2011 Season - 2011 WOMEN'S TRACK & FIELD REVIEW

Ella Mathieson won two events at the CCIW meet and she set a new school record in the long jump.

Thanks to tremendous seasons from a core group of seniors, the Augustana women’s track & field team once again enjoyed a successful season in 2011. Veteran head coach Fred Whiteside’s team finished the year ranked 19th in the final NCAA Division III dual meet power rankings as compiled by the U.S. Track & Field & Cross Country Coaches Association.

Augustana has enjoyed great success during Whiteside’s 24 year run as the head coach. Over the past five seasons the Vikings have finished each year ranked in the top 30 of NCAA Division III. In 2007 the Vikings were seventh and they followed that with 11th (2008) and 12th (2009) place rankings. In 2010 they were 28th before jumping up to 19th this year.

Three seniors who shared the Most Valuable Performer award in 2011 had a huge part in that success. Distance runner Hannah Hottle (Monmouth-Roseville HS, Monmouth, Ill.), jumper Ella Mathieson (Lyons Township HS, LaGrange, Ill.) and sprinter Brittney Bennett (Annawan HS, Annawan, Ill.) shared the top honor as a result of a vote by their teammates.

Hottle was named the “Track Athlete of the Meet” at the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin championship on May 7. She won the 800 in 2:12.07 and the 1500 in 4:36.21 and set new conference records in both events. She qualified for the NCAA Division III national meet in both the 800 and 1500 and placed 21st in the 800. She was also handled the anchor leg on the 1600 relay team that set a new school record of 3:51.04 and placed 10th in the nation. Joining her on the 1600 relay were Bennett, senior Amy Walsh (Cary-Grove HS, Cary, Ill.) and freshman Kierra Smith (Creston HS, Creston, Iowa).

Bennett had the best times on the team in the 100 (:12.76), 200 (:25.64) and 400 (:56.65) and she qualified for the national meet in the 400 where she placed 16th.

Mathieson was a double winner at the CCIW meet, taking the long jump with a school record leap of 18’ 6” and winning the triple jump at 37’ 6”. She qualified for the national meet in both events and was 11th in the long jump.

Senior Katie Ries (Iowa City Regina HS, Iowa City, Iowa) set a new school record in the 3000 steeplechase, running 11:20.97 on May 13 at the Dr. Keeler Invitational in Naperville. She broke Hottle’s record of 11:30.95 set a year ago.

Bennett (400), Hottle (800), Mathieson (long jump) and the 1600 relay all participated in the NCAA Division III national meet in Delaware, Ohio on May 26-28. Hottle also qualified in the 1500 but did not compete in that event. Mathieson met the qualifying standard in the triple jump but was not selected in the final field. Walsh ran 1:04.21 in 400 hurdles and the qualifying standard for that event was 1:04.20.

The Vikings were fifth in the CCIW championship with 104.5 points. They placed second in the Viking Olympics and the Augustana Invitational and took fifth in the Lee Calhoun Invitational.

Bennett, Hottle, Mathieson and Walsh, along with fellow seniors Brittany Prazak (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) and Anita Maurer (Downers Grove North HS, Downers Grove, Ill.) served as team captains this year.

Walsh and Prazak shared the Erica Vortman Viking Spirit Award with senior Meaghan Reaney (Lincoln-Way Central HS, New Lenox, Ill.), sophomore Jennifer Prazak (Naperville North HS, Naperville, Ill.) and senior manager Daun Greif (Sandwich HS, Sandwich, Ill.).

Smith, another member of the record-setting 1600 relay, and Johanna Schnitzler (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) were selected as Most Valuable Freshmen. Smith ran an Augustana season-best :15.36 in the 100 hurdles and Schnitzler recorded team bests in the high jump (4’ 11”) and heptathlon (3,637).

Senior Katie Ries (Regina HS, Iowa City, Iowa), who broke Hottle’s school record in the 3000-meter steeplechase (11:20.97) this year, shared Susan Wall Most Improved honors with sophomore thrower Bethany Siwek (Woodstock HS, Woodstock, Ill.).

Juniors Morgan Gale (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.), Amber Gruber (Rolling Meadows HS, Arlington Heights, Ill.) and Melissa Lehpamer (Plainfield South HS, Plainfield, Ill.) were named captains-elect for 2012.
