2010 Season - Women's soccer heads to Europe

The Augustana women's soccer team will spend 11 days and play four matches in Europe, beginning on Monday, May 23.

Even though the 2010-11 school year officially ends at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 19, neither the learning nor the athletic competition is finished for the Augustana women’s soccer team. Head coach Scott Mejia will take a contingent of 32 Viking players for an 11 day tour that will include stops in Spain, France and Italy.

Augustana will play a total of four matches on the trip with two against club teams from Spain and two against teams from Italy. The first match will be on Wednesday, May 25 at 8:45 p.m. in Barcelona, Spain against Club Deportivo Europa Barcelona. One day later, on May 26, the Vikings will play at 6:00 p.m. against RCD Espanyol, also in Barcelona. There will be a four day break before the next match, which will be on Monday, May 30 at 7:00 p.m. against Firenze Calcio Femminile in Florence, Italy. The final competition will be on Wednesday, June 1 in Rome, Italy against Francesco Totti at 7:00 p.m.

The Augustana party will leave Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on Monday, May 23 and will land at DeGaulle Airport in Paris, France. There will be tours and sightseeing in Barcelona, Nice, Rome and Florence. Some of the highlights will be visits to Camp Nou Stadium, home of FC Barcelona, the French Riveria, a visit to the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence and a walking tour of Rome.

“This is a great opportunity for the young women in our program,” said Mejia, who has fashioned a record of 137-47-16 in 10 seasons at the helm of the Vikings. “We will get a wonderful combination of academic and cultural exposure along with some tremendous athletic competition. These trips are a great opportunity for team growth and bonding and I know that the players are really looking forward to it.”

Mejia is no stranger to foreign travel. He took his women’s team to Costa Rica in the summer of 2008 and earlier he took the men and women’s teams at Augustana to Holland, Belgium and Germany during the summer of 2004 in a combined venture.
