2010-11 Season - Sapio & McNamara share "MVP" honors

Tricia Sapio earned a share of "MVP" honors with Shannen McNamara for the 2011 season. Sapio finished with 22 singles victories this season and 101 total wins for her career.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. – Senior Tricia Sapio (Barrington HS, Hoffman Estates, Ill.) and freshman Shannen McNamara (Battle Mountain HS, Avon, Colo.) shared “Most Valuable Player” honors, it was announced at the Augustana women’s tennis banquet.  Freshman Kim Sawyer (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) was tabbed as the “Newcomer of the Year”, senior Sheri Hendricks (Wheaton Warrenville South HS, Warrenville, Ill.) received the “Most Inspirational” award, and junior Brittany Reece (Naperville Neuqua Valley HS, Naperville, Ill.) earned “Most Improved” honors for the Vikings.

Sapio finished the season with a 22-15 record in singles and also added 13 wins on the doubles court.  She finished her career with 101 victories after having 66 entering her final year with the Blue & Gold.  Sapio played a little bit at No. 5 and No. 6 as a freshman and worked her way up the lineup throughout her career, playing No. 2 in the spring of her junior year and No. 3 this past spring.  She finished third in the No. 4 singles flight at the CCIW Tournament last fall.

McNamara finished up a spectacular first year with Augustana, going 25-9 in singles and 22-9 in doubles.  Her 25 wins on the singles court is tied for fifth all-time in a single season.  McNamara also won 20 doubles matches with Sawyer, putting the duo sixth on the all-time single season wins list.  She finished third at the No. 1 singles position at the CCIW Tournament last fall.

Sawyer had a fabulous freshman campaign and led the team with a 29-7 singles mark, breaking the single season record of 27 that had been held by Margo Clarke from the 1997-98 season.  She also finished at 22-9 in doubles for a total of 51 wins in her first year.  Sawyer earned runner-up honors in the No. 2 singles flight at the CCIW Tournament last fall and also advanced to the semi-finals of the consolation bracket the ITA Regional Tournament.

Hendricks was 13-10 in singles and 9-9 in doubles as a senior.  Her biggest singles victory came in a 5-4 win over Grinnell earlier in the spring.  She also won in a third set super tie-breaker as Augustana defeated Carthage and advanced to the CCIW AQ championship match.

Reece finished at 12-7 in singles and 17-9 on the doubles court.  She was 29-16 overall this season and has 77 victories for her career.  Reece won in straight sets against Coe and also against Carthage this spring.  She teamed with sophomore Krista Panko (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) for an 11-3 mark in doubles, giving the duo the tenth highest single season winning percentage on the all-time list at 78.6 percent.

The Vikings finished the season with a mark of 20-9, breaking the school record of 19 victories that was held by the 1993-94 squad.  Augustana finished in a tie for second at the CCIW Tournament, the highest finish for the Blue & Gold since 1997.  The Vikings also advanced to the championship match of the CCIW AQ event for the first time in five years.
