2011 Season - Top ranked Vikings roll at Dubuque

Senior James Wood won the open 200 and ran legs on the winning 400 and 1600 relay teams as Augustana, ranked first in NCAA Division III, piled up 11 event victories at the Dubuque Open on Friday, April 22.

DUBUQUE, Iowa - For the second consecutive weekend the Augustana men’s track & field team had to battle the elements as well as the competition. However, the number one ranked Vikings persevered and won 11 events at the Dubuque Open on Friday, April 22 at Douglas J. Miller Track in Dubuque, Iowa.

There were no team scores kept but veteran head coach Paul Olsen’s team clearly dominated the meet, which was held in rain, high winds and falling temperatures. In addition to the 11 victories, which were broken down by six individual track events, two relays and three field events, Augustana scored in every event.

Senior James Wood (St. Charles North HS, St. Charles, Ill.) had part in three victories. He won the 200 in a time of :22.37 and handled legs on the winning 400 (:42.60) and 1600 (3:18.50) relay teams. He ran the third leg on the 400 relay, joining freshman Jay Graffagna (Geneva HS, LaFox, Ill.), sophomore Greg Patton (Bloomington HS, Bloomington, Ill.) and sophomore Alex Rindone (Marmion Academy, Geneva, Ill.). In the 1600 relay Rindone led off, followed by Wood, junior Greg Davis (Carlinville HS, Carlinville, Ill.) and Patton. Patton was second in the 200 in :22.58 and Graffagna took fourth in :22.68. Davis placed second in the 110 hurdles with a clocking of :15.57.

Senior Jason Langslet (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) won the 400 in :51.04, as Augustana swept the first five places. Senior Matt Somers (Naperville Central HS, Naperville, Ill.) was second in :51.48 while freshman Steve Zahrobsky (Downers Grove South HS, Woodridge, Ill.) placed third in :51.53. Freshman Edgar Valle (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) finished fourth in :51.77 and senior Greg Weigand (Wheaton-Warrenville South HS, Wheaton, Ill.) was fifth in :52.20.

Sophomore Justin Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) took the 800 in 1:59.36 while sophomore Dennis O’Flaherty (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) was fourth in 2:01.74 and sophomore Steve Rogers (Crystal Lake South HS, Crystal Lake, Ill.) finished fifth in 2:05.74.

Freshman Kevin Gray (Batavia HS, Batavia, Ill.) won the 1500 in 4:14.24. Freshman Tyler Busch (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) was third in 4:18.74 with sophomore Nathan Smith (Fenton HS, Bensenville, Ill.) grabbing fourth in 4:18.96. Junior Thomas Christian (Port Angeles HS, Port Angeles, Wash.) ran 4:19.03 to take fifth.

Freshman Isaac Trostle (Willowbrook HS, Lombard, Ill.) won the 5000 in 16:04.84 with senior Eric Erspamer (Bartlett HS, Bartlett, Ill.) taking third in 16:48.26. Freshman Alex Stockwell (Glenbard West HS, Glen Ellyn, Ill.) won the 3000 steeplechase in 10:22.29, leading a one-two-three Viking sweep. Senior Lucas Westblade (Will Carleton Academy, Hillsdale, Mich.) finished second in 10:28.43 and junior Ryan Bertram (Neuqua Valley HS, Bolingbrook, Ill.) was third in 10:32.23.

Senior Patrick Zeunik (Bloomington Central Catholic HS, Bloomington, Ill.) won the long jump with a leap of 21’ 1 ½”. Junior Matt Deets (Polo HS, Polo, Ill.) was second at 19’ 9 ¾” with sophomore Ethan Gale (Oregon HS, Oregon, Ill.) fourth with a leap of 18’ 6”. Freshman Joshua Eisenberg (Richmond-Burton HS, Spring Grove, Ill.) was fifth with a mark of 17’ 6 ¾”.

Junior Brian Benning (Winnebago HS, Winnebago, Ill.) took first in the shot with a toss of 47’ 9” with junior Phil Christensen (Kaneland HS, Maple Park, Ill.) placing third with a throw of 43’ 6”. Sophomore Kevin Macek (Carl Sandburg HS, Orland Park, Ill.) finished fourth at 43’ 6”.

Junior Adam Myers (Dixon HS, Dixon, Ill.) uncorked a heave of 175’ 4” to win the hammer with Christensen finishing third (161’ 10”) and Benning taking fourth (160’ 0”).

Freshman Nick Sinon (Kaneland HS, Elburn, Ill.) finished second in the high jump with a leap of 6’ 2”. Sophomore Colton VanKirk (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) went over 14’ 5 ¼” in the pole vault to place second, the same height that senior Eric Chalus (Rochelle HS, Rochelle, Ill.) cleared in taking third place. Senior Alex Mikos (Fenton HS, Wood Dale, Ill.) was fourth with a clearance of 13’ 5 ¼”.

Senior Brendan Bradley (Mundelein HS, Mundelein, Ill.) placed second in the 400 hurdles with a time of :59.06. Freshman Scott Pospisill (Geneva HS, Geneva, Ill.) was fourth in 1:01.34 and sophomore Devon Pace (Byron HS, Byron, Ill.) took fifth in 1:01.97. Bradley was also fifth in the 110 high hurdles in :15.76. Sophomore Floyd Mays (Mooseheart HS, Justice, Ill.) ran :11.51 which was good enough for fifth place in the 100.
